I love that Steven Moffat gave John Hurt dialogue that was unique to his Doctor. "I serve notice on you all" is not a line that you'd hear from any other incarnation. Neither is "Standing ready" which he said when the Doctor's swooped in to save Gallifrey. Little details like that made John Hurt feel like his own Doctor instead of just a stand in for Christopher Ecclestone.

I like how it goes from "We have the Doctor surrounded, inform high command" to "The Doctor is escaping" very quickly. From the perspective of anyone else who heard those two things in such a short amount of time, they'd wonder how the hell that happened.

- Fear me! I've killed hundreds of Time Lords!

- Fear me. I've killed all of them.

2:35 he's referring to the final sanction in The End of Time
A nice little nod

I'm so glad Sir John Hurt played in this. He was such a great actor and could play The War Doctor like none other.

People have complained about Moffat's portrayal of Daleks in the days after the Time War but he does great work with them here. This is when they're at their most powerful and although they aren't as prevalent in the story as the Zygons, Moffat makes sure to account for the fact that these things are a genuine threat, even to the Time Lords.

Nice references to Omega here. Clearly the Time Lords still revere him even though he went bonkers.

Ok just wanted to point this out since, no-one else has. But at 1:41 you can see the gallifreyan look in a little of surprise hearing the doctors name before just bopping out of the daleks cross-fire.

I genuinely wonder if the doctors exploits in the time war were revered by the people of gallifrey rather than just the armed forces as well.

Makes you wonder why the General has such a personal distaste for the Doctor. The Doctor was President of the High Council twice and walked away both times because he didn't want the responsibility; was sent to destroy the Daleks at their genesis and flubbed it, resulting in the Time War; and probably spent the entire Time War doing his own thing, military hierarchy be damned.

2:35 nice little End of Time reference. Fun fact, the End of Time Part 2 has a reference to the moment. Nice of Moffat to bring that reference full circle

I gotta feel with the war doctor in this situation... dude was saving everything he knew from a time loop... forever suffering... and he was like nope im ima just end this now.. there are things worse than death.. dude probably was watching people die like capaldi was punching through the time dial.. for billions of years..and was just like fuck it im done.

Fun question, why did he write in English on a planet that doesn’t speak English?

He has a doctorate in trolling.

*Time Lords - have the ability to regenerate when dying and become a new being literally*

*Also Time Lords - wiped out during a war*

I was always disappointed that this scene didn't show the galifreyans regenerating. The battle scene would have been awesome with random people bursting into regenerative energy in the background or on the sides of the street.

The importance of this scene is that during the Time War, the Doctor watched innocent kids get killed and he vowed, No More

The Time War after Lord President Romana discover the Daleks had a weapon (The Apocalypse Element) a weapon which match The Moment in destructive power. Romana immediately order the weapon be destroyed

This is so cool becausee its similar to a 4 star general that is barely involved in any conflict suddenly becomes a 5 star general during time of war so he gears up and goes out into theater to give the enemies hell. I have seen generals go from happy-go-lucky and having a great time with his soldiers during 5k runs to "Its time to show these fuckers what we're made of" in a matter of moments...

Or how your pacifist healer becomes a war paladin lol

Kirk: Spock can the computer recreate the songs? Spock: the sounds not the language! We'll be responding in gibberish. Same principle applies to the War Doctor's message
