I did a number of fitness tests to see how fit and healthy I am, and compared the results to my Garmin watch.
Tests included:
- Resting metabolic test
- Body composition & skin fold test
- ECG
- Spirometry
- Lactate threshold test
- Vo2 Max test

I wasn't planing on sitting through the whole thing nor was I expecting to want to see it all. Yet I watched it all. It was great! Clear, informative, and even when it was long, it went direct to the point. Thank you for taking the time to document everything.

Some notes about this video:
1. My Tanita scales that I use at home were surprisingly accurate compared to the scientific scales at the lab. The main thing was they followed the same pattern, _and_ showed my muscle was too low and fat too high, so they are a really useful tool for me to have.

2. Something I forgot to mention, regarding the Vo2 max score on my watch, I think it's taking into account my previous lighter weight (61kg), instead of the weight I'm currently at (65kg). This would cause the Vo2 max predictor to be off because the score is given in comparison to body weight.

3. Since making this video I have learned that being strong (as in strong muscles) is better for long term health than being fit (as in being able to run fast and having a high Vo2 max). I will explain more about this in a future video soon.

Thanks for watching! I appreciate you 🙏🏼

I didn't expect that video to be so open and honest about your own health condition. You are a brave woman !

I did a VO2 MAX test recently and the scores were really close to my Garmin Enduro. So glad I did the test. The info has been beyond amazing for me

Never worry about your video being too long: they tend to, in fact, be just as long as they should be. You keep them entertaining and informative, it seems to be your style which is handy don't you think?

Great content LT! I've watched my 80 y.o. mum suffer from the triple whammy of sarcopenia: she eats less protein, her body processes less of the protein she does eat and she exercises less. She has gone from a fit regular walker to a frail old lady. Having read up on it and listened to podcasts, I started doing a regular strength and conditioning routine and within a few weeks could feel myself get stronger. I've also started adding protein powder to my smoothies. It is amazing how my body strength and confidence have improved. I look forward to following your journey. Thanks

Great video. You are absolutely right. I started cycling again four years ago to build my long-term health. It has paid off my VO2 Max has increased, now it’s at 48, and at 67 years old, I’m happy with that, and will do what I can to hang on too it for as long as I can.

I used to do yoga 4 times a week, but was feeling the strain in my wrists, elbows, and tendons. I now do yoga only twice a week, and have swapped out the other 2 times for HIIT strength training with dumbbells and kettlebells. My body has definitely responded well to this change, feeling much better. This happened after my last visit to my dietitian, where the InBody scan highlighted the fact that I had lost 600g of muscle since a year prior. We are lucky to have such health metrics available for us to navigate safely into our 50s.

This video was so enlightening. I think a yearly body MOT should be done by everyone so that we can keep track of things going on in our body. It's definitely got me thinking! Great video and I'll be subscribing 🙂

Good to see your still at it Laura, I was elite athlete once upon a time swimmer then later a triathlete some 25 years ago,
We had lots off different performance bench marks we had to achieve :-

Range of movement in deg, flexibility, strength testing, lactate, Max heart rate test skin fold, vo2 ,
Pyramid builds and
High intensity interval training in my opinion was the best . Even thought I was a 1500m freestyler, we did lots of explosive training ie
40 by 50m on 40sec I use to cruise in on around 32 sec and 8 sec rest, however some of the folks that were at Olympic level were doing there 50s on 28-29 sec .

Keep up the good work I wish I had your enthusiasm to get back into it .

Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

Great video Laura! You inspire so many people, myself included and it’s a good wake up call for this late 50s recreational runner that the older I get the more I need to strength train. I will have to find a way to enjoy it as much as I love my daily running and walking adventures 😂 Incidentally I switched watches from a Garmin to a Coros and overnight my estimated VO2 max dropped 15 points so I do suspect that Garmins use historic data. Thank you for doing these great videos, keep them coming! Best wishes from AU.
