On Wednesday, CBS News Miami's Joan Murray looked into the complaints that an expensive Fort Lauderdale apartment building had no A/C and other maintenance problems. Not even a day later, she uncovered that there were people in other buildings nearby having the same issues.

For such a "luxury" apartment it looks like crap.

I have a friend that works in Private equity. These apartment complexes get bought out by private equity firms and they cut costs to extremes to increase profit margins. A lot of times these belong to an REIT that's listed in the stock market so they have to make the numbers look before earnings season....That's US capitalism at it work for you!

This is what happens when private equity takes over

What people need to do is let their managers know that they will be putting the rents into an escrow account. That means the rent is still being paid but the management can't get it until any and all repairs are made and approved by the city inspectors. ( you can not be evicted for this )

But if you are late 1 day they will start evictions immediately.

Number one priority for the management company is profits.

In Denver I lived in an apartment that marketed itself at “luxury”… no hot water all winter. During the summer there was at least 20 days where they’d shut off the water completely during business hours. It gets between 80-100 degrees in the summer. They A/C did absolutely nothing. I have a rabbit and he developed a bald spot due to the heat even though I had like 4 plug in fans going. I had to spend $500 for an a/c unit from Best Buy because everything at Walmart and Target were sold out. When I asked them about reimbursement they refused. Not to mention my car being vandalized and stolen. Another person said they had a wasps nest growing inside their wall. I had one on my balcony that I informed them about but they never did anything. They make these places look good in pictures and on the surface, but they are cheaply remodeled and terrible quality.

Imagine living in an apartment building that has so many issues that you have to enlist the media to help you?

MOLD is a great health issue! California had a lot of these law suits in the nineties until manegement companies lost millions from residents getting sick and attorneys suing them until they started addressing the problem inmediately!!!

they own thousands of apartments in that area? Is the building massive or many different buildings. That's scary to have mold in the hallways, there is always more that you don't see.

The well being of the tenants is NOT the owners first priority.

These property managers are incentivized to not address tenant concerns by getting a bonus for keeping their budgets under a certain amount for the year. No one from upper management ever checks to make sure tenant problems are addressed before they hand out these bonuses. It’s a big problem all over the country. I don’t see a solution for this problem because the landlords are overseas developers and hedge fund companies. Lobbying has helped to create this issue..

Welcome to Florida. You don't pay state taxes so there are no departments funded to help the people. Nothing is for free.

Solmar on Sixth has been an issue for a year now - constant flooding and constant lack of management action. The roof continues to leak and continues to be treated with bandaid solutions.

This is a bigger problem than people realize. Lots of high rise buildings in Ft. Lauderdale/ Miami area are not up to code and the people speaking out about have been ignored for a long time.

This exact thing happened at another huge complex in the area a couple years ago. Management doesn’t want to cool the hallways, so mold forms on the ceiling and walls. It also drives up the AC costs for all of the units. Most of these buildings are luxury in name only.

I guess anything better than a tent under an overpass is now considered “luxury”.

They will all get big rent increases for ratting on the management.

We are having many of these issues at Camden Las Olas.
