There are four different types of avalanches:
Slab avalanches, which are made of tightly packed snow; Loose avalanches,
which are formed by looser snow; Powder avalanches, that are created when
snow and air mix to form a type of powder; and Wet avalanches, caused when snow loses its strength by becoming damp with water. A natural avalanche can be set off by increased precipitation, snow weakening, earthquakes, rockfalls, icefalls, snowfall, erosion, and metamorphic changes in the snowpack such as melting due to solar radiation. Ninety percent of avalanche disasters are caused by Humans and each year, they kill hundreds of people Worldwide. Large avalanches have the capability to capture and move ice, rocks, and trees. They can happen in any mountain range that has an enduring snowpack and are most frequent in winter or spring, but can occur at any time of year. Can avalanches be triggered by loud sounds? No! This myth has been proven wrong, because the pressure from sound is too small in order of magnitude to trigger an avalanche. Enjoy the snowy outdoors... but be careful out there!
