This gas is also used during eye surgery. When I had a retina detachment repair, the gas is used to replace the eye vitreous that is removed during the procedure. The gas provides shape to the eye and helps to press on areas of the retina that were tacked down by a laser during the surgery. Eventually the gas is replaced by new vitreous fluid as the eye heals.

it is one of the most inert gasses there is, it's 6 times heavier than air, and it's classified as a greenhouse gas 23, 500 times worse than CO2. Used in high voltage equipment mainly nowadays as an insulating medium it used to be used in consumer goods until it was banned about 4 decades ago. A few people have commented on how it's 6 times heavier than air so it "can't be a greenhouse gas". That's incorrect because it doesn't have to be floating high above the atmosphere to cause the greenhouse effect to happen (Even though like most gases you will find it there). It's molecular structure and its density means it can retain more infra-red energy than air or CO2. A better analogy (instead of a greenhouse) would be a gaseous heat-sink....but gases by nature do not congregate into a blob on earth, they spread out and mingle with other types of gaseous molecules but at the same time as doing that, the SF6 molecule will emit infra-red radiation, that increases the temperature of it's surrounding spaces. And this is the most simple lay-person explanation for a Complex process.

This gas is used for arc suppression in high voltage electrical switching and circuit breakers.

now we just need to be able to make clouds thick enough to float a car

At a company I used to work for we had to do work on a high voltage transformer that was insulated with sulfur hexafluoride. We forgot to attach one little but very important nut inside. So some other fellows held onto my legs, and I tilted my head and upper body back into the transformer to screw on the nut. When I pulled my head out and said something I sounded like Darth Vader. It was awesome.

"It's boating in a sea of sulfure hexafloride" 😂

Here in Germany back in the 90s you had the choice of having you car tyres filled with it which had the effect of keeping the tyre pressure constant. A little bit of overkill perfection when doing more than 250 for hours on end on the Autobahn.. I tried it once, seemed ok.
