Germany was historically split into East and West for the duration of the Cold War, but aside from politics, this is not the best way to split Germany.
It makes more sense to split them into north and south, or Catholic and Protestant.

The south of Germany wouldn’t get a lot of valuable land, or at least not as valuable as the Rhineland, which would mostly go to North Germany.

Germany kinda had to be divided east and west, because the Soviet Union was on the eastern side, and the U.S., U.K., and France are on the western side. A north - south division wouldn't have made practical sense from the point of view of the victorious allies. Also, remember Germany was actually divided into 4 zones of occupation immediately after the war (U.S., British, French, & Soviet), and it was then easy to unite the 3 western zones into one big western zone, which when put together was much bigger than the eastern zone. When the western powers and the Soviets became estranged from each other so that a 'cold war' began, the east - west division into separate German states with different ideologies became more firmly established.

I always say East Germany had one of the biggest economies, nearly everyone had work and most stuff was cheap, which you cannot say about modern Germany. Just compare what you had to pay for a drivers license in East Germany, which was like 30 - 60 Mark, compared to today where you have to pay over 3000€.

I live in Brandenburg and my town had a lot of factories during the DDR, but after the unification it nearly lost everything and is now a dying town.

If dividing Germany is done along lines from linguistic variants, by that logic, a lot of Baden-Württemberg would go to Switzerland, due to their local variants being close enough to each other.
