I remember a spokesperson after the accident occurred saying the tropical fish died due to the bitter cold and thinking to myself, "Are you sure it wasn't the lack of water that did them in?"

I love how you put one of the most vertical disasters on shorts

This was such a big deal here in Germany. Mostly because of the fish that died. The damages were also a big deal, but most people here were talking about the fishes dying.

I am forever baffled that there wasn't a single security camera pointed at this thing. The footage would have been incredible.

Didn't stay at the hotel, but I did get to see the Aquarium. It was majestic.

To be inside the elevator when the tank collapsed would be horrifying

I was living in Berlin at the time of the burst. I remember my students were late since they closed the area due to flooding.

My heart goes out to the fish; very few of them were saved 😢

RIP those poor fishies. I hope they gave them a good memorial instead of flushing them.

Aquaria scale up very, very badly, thanks to the square-cube law -- the surface area of the enclosure goes up as the square of the linear dimensions, but volume (and therefore the mass of water contained, and the total pressure exerted on the walls) goes up as the cube.

And as the height-to-width ratio increases, it only gets worse because in a tall aquarium, pressure and tensile stresses on the walls are concentrated at the bottom.

Which means (1) that any very large aquarium is a serious feat of engineering, particularly one like this that is free-standing and without any external frame. And (2) failures will almost always be catastrophic, as with any vessel containing large pressures.

I was there just after it happened. We thought it was a terrorist attack at first cos the front was all smashed up like a bomb has gone off with police everywhere and no go zones. Only later did we learn it was this tank

Doesn't surprise me that they have no plans to replace it. The upkeep for saltwater aquariums is intense. You need a real love of the hobby to keep saltwater more than a few years. Most I know never went past 5 years before they drained it. I bet they were happy to be rid of it. Absolutely beautiful but such a pain in the a$$ (yeah, it's expensive too).

1000 tonnes of water just sitting there vertically...

I remember when this happened. The pics of the fish all over the lobby, and even in the street, were sad to see. Maybe we should leave aquariums like this to places where they can be taken care of and not a display for a hotel.

While it's a totally cool structure, it is astounding that there were no human casualties.

They now have a garden display... I was going to stay there with the family, just to see the aquarium.. They are not going to do another aquarium..

I see tank and thought that's pretty cool. Then I heard the narrators voice and realized what channel I was on.
