The chorine also reacts with sweat and skin oils to produce the pool smell, it’s not just urine.

You need to control for sweat, and other bacteria/oil. Chlorine reacts with those two, so the smell doesn’t necessarily mean someome peed in the pool

Peeing in a public pool should be a crime

For anyone wondering, from a pool professional, its a reaction with ammonia.

So to go a bit further (for those who are wondering) its specifically the urea in urine that will react with the chlorine in the pool. The urea will be hydrolyzed by the chlorine until chloramines form, and it's the chloramines that are responsible for the iconic "pool smell". I'm sure there might be other ways for these compounds to form (I.e., body oils and sweat) but I just wanted to see what compound in the urine would contribute to the smell specifically.

also, test this with any other bacteria, I own a pool and this smell will happen any time chlorine is breaking down, even with excessive plant matter.

What you’re smelling is called chloramines or chlorine burn off, what’s happening is the chlorine is bindinging to the urine, sweat, oils, what have you and making them inert(decontaminated) and when they do that they tend to separate from the water molecules and come to the surface of the water and this the smell, the chlorine not bonded to anything is uniform throughout the water and thus no smell. Was a pool guy for about 10 years.

Now we need to find a pool on opening day. Then, we'll truly be cursed with knowledge.

Perhaps if it’s a chemical reaction with bacteria; from body fat for example may play a roll too? unless it’s chemical reaction with ammonia only urine?

The people saying the smell also comes from sweat and skin oils might not be aware that there are more similarities between urine and sweat than differences. Think about that the next time you think you need a shower.
