Most people associate ramen with broke college students, but the story behind these instant noodles is far more surprising. The instant dinner is the brainchild of Momofuku Ando, a Japanese businessman who was on a mission to solve a post-WWII hunger crisis.

This story is a part of our Flavors series, where we do so much more than play with our food. Come with us as we dive into deliciously different and tastefully off-beat stories in the culinary world.

Great Big Story is a video network dedicated to the untold, overlooked & flat-out amazing. Humans are capable of incredible things & we're here to tell their stories. When a rocket lands in your backyard, you get in.

Before Ando solved the problem, making ramen took a lot of effort and some skill from the cook. It was hard to make it right, and as a result, it was eaten mainly in restaurants and shops. Ando's innovations made it possible for anyone to make reasonably good ramen at home and inexpensively. This was a huge thing at the time, and he is rightfully regarded as an icon.

You REALLY shouldn't microwave cup noodles, the styrofoam melts into the food. They expressly say no to do it on the package

The main goal : solve the hunger crisis in Japan
What actually happened : saved a bunch of hungry and broke college kids around the world ( and maybe also solved the hunger crisis)
True respect.

0:02: As a college student who's 19 (soon to be 20) years old and kinda broke, I'm proud to be a fan of instant ramen.

Iconic struggle meal not only because it’s cheap but because of how versatile it is. Pour franks red hot in the broth and make it spicy, you can drain out the water put some tuna in it and flavor it with whatever you can find for a quick cheap homemade pasta
