hmm, ramen wasn't really "traditional" at the point Ando came up with instant noodles, it was largely considered a Chinese food, and in fact, up until the 50s, it was still refered to as "Chinese soba" (支那そば). Ramen took off in Japan after WWII because America flooded the market with flour to help out with the rice food shortages.

It is not accurate to say that Mr. Ando invented or developed instant noodles. Deep fried noodles themselves had already existed in the Chinese cultural sphere before, and he industrialized and commercialized it as instant noodles. Of course, there were many innovations in the process of industrialization, but he did not accomplish that alone either, and there were various disputes and deals over patents. Nevertheless he is credited and praised as the creator of the instant noodles because of his strategy of keeping his core patents open and not monopolized. This allowed many companies not only in Japan but also in many other countries to freely develop and produce instant noodles, and the instant noodles became a global food culture (and his company Nissin is still one of the big players in the industry). He was the great business person.
