Apollo 11: The final 13 minutes before the Moon landing - BBC News

The minutes before landing were tense, as connections frequently dropped out between the lunar module, Eagle, and mission control - and it was believed that fuel was running low.

Relive the tense moments as Neil Armstrong manually piloted Eagle towards the surface of the Moon.

What amazes me is that we watch this on our smartphones with technology that used to fit into an entire room

50 years ago, My brother, dad and I were coming back from camping and heard the Eagle had landed while we were in the car. When we got home we watched Neil Armstrong take his first steps on the moon. It was amazing! I was so disappointed later when they canceled the last Apollo moon missions. It was just stupid and political. We should have kept up the effort.

This will never be repeated, what I mean by that, in 1969 the astronauts had a very high work load, using a slow computer, reading analogue gauges and switches, flying the last few minutes by hand control etc.
When it happens again in the next few years planned landing, 99.9% of the landing or even 100% will totally be computer automated.
These Apollo men really were the best of the best no doubt about it,

I really wish we would make it to Mars in my lifetime — just to wait for that thirty-minute delay as the communications travel back to earth. The visuals would just be unbelievable. I know it’s very expensive and very dangerous but that spirit of invention was astonishing. Bravo to all of the brave cosmonauts who advanced the space tech as well.

Just wow. So amazing to listen to that 13 minutes of conversation between Eagle and Mission Control, just before the landing. God, the tension is tangible. Like a great sci fi movie, but it happened - 50 years ago. It is awe-inspiring to imagine what it must have been like for Armstrong and Aldrin as they descended in the LM.

🤣 why is there a fake 4 second delay to Neil but not to Charlie??? He's supposed to be orbiting the moon in the command module. Cancelling my TV licence asap.

The entire story of moon landing was a masterpiece narration to the world. The reason to believe the story on moon landing was well received bcoz 50 yrs back ppl were not well equipped with their knowledge on science and technology space. Way back anything can be easily prescribed to the entire population to garner attention from all the quarters. Eventually which helped them to project themself (NASA) a pioneer and Maverick in space technology. In current scenario, the same drama could not be set up anymore. Their lie could be easily be exposed. Imagine like NASA someone who had the ability to send someone on moon in 1969, by now they could have easily sent someone to explore MARS. If not MARS at least they could have started off with hospitality service could be a exotic vacay on moon. In one word it was an eyewash.

What a marvel! Technological achievement and mathematical precision helped indomitable human spirits in achieving this great leap. Mike Collins memoir "Carrying the Fire" is a great book people must read to appreciate the human courage and science behind this hair rising mission. Can't wait to watch the mars landing. Praying it will be successful like this one.

that guy Roger (Rog) seemed very important in this... but he never gets mentioned or even thanks in the history books ... 😏

Neil Armstrong alongwith Buzz Aldrin. Why people always forget about him. And Michael Collins in the orbiter. They three are equally responsible for the history they created.
