in 1987 high school students did not have the internet. We read many magazines like Time and National Geographic. I remember this and many other NG covers, even today. In many ways, I'd say it was better way to learn because an article had to go through several stages of editorial approval in order to get published. To get a photo like this, you had to be a pro photographer, because there was no i-phone. I first read about heart surgery in 1983, when I was 15 or so. Another story I remember was about "Act UP", the AIDS advocacy group. I still remember seeing pictures of patients with Kaposi's sarcoma lesions.

The patient holding the picture gave me chills. Medicine really is a blessing to all of us. Unfortunately not everyone can afford this type of care and that’s sad.

Surgeons like these are truly heroes and even the nurses alongside them. My mom wouldn’t be alive without the amazing surgeon who never gave up on her once. She was dead for 14 minutes, and they didn’t give up. She is alive now and living a great long life. Thanks to that amazing surgeon and the nurses alongside him. My mom can continue living. It’s so hard to wrap words around to show how appreciative I am for it all.

It's a great photo and a great feat. He deserves recognition. For South Africans, Dr Chris Barnard is our hero - the first surgeon to ever perform a heart transplant and he will always be a name we remember whenever a heart transplant is mentioned.

Actually the first heart transplant was done by Dr Chris Barnard in South Africa with his team, performed the world's first human-to-human heart transplant operation on 3 December 1967. It was a major historical event and a significant breakthrough for medical science.

I wish life rewarded more these people. I get that they have the satisfaction, but they deserve even more.

My dad has been on the heart team for over 35 yrs. He is a perfusionist and has run the heart and lung machine on newborns to 80 yr old patients. He has had many hours sitting along side the surgeons keeping their heart stable during and after heart transplants. He has been so humbled by his experiences. They truely are heroes. ❤

I'm having heart surgery July, 26th 2023. So in just 3 weeks. Its not a transplant, its an ablation but still.. thanks to this doctor I'm able to have this surgery and hopefully live a normal life again. I've been having more & more episodes of tachycardia. To the point i can no longer work out or do anything AT ALL strenuous. Its been this way for four years now. I was born with heart murmurs but at some point it switched to this. I hope it works fully the first time without need of a second surgery. Huge Thank you to every doctor like this one who have made this possible ❤ pll keep saying i shouldn't be afraid but, I am. Ive been praying a lot.

As a nurse who bent over ever so slightly the other day to dress a wound on a patients leg and had a sore back afterwards... I have mad respect for this, I can not even imagine doing a 24 hour surgery!Heroic!❤😮
