The Princess of Wales has announced tonight that she has been diagnosed with cancer aged 42 and is undergoing ‘preventative’ chemotherapy.

In a deeply emotional video message, filmed at Windsor on Wednesday, Catherine revealed the news had come as a ‘huge shock’ and that she and William ‘have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family’.

The diagnosis came days after she was seen smiling with Prince William as they left their favourite farm shop close to their Windsor home.

I battled breast cancer 20 years ago this month. Immediately after my final chemo treatment I underwent a complete hysterectomy. It was a devastating/exhausting year for me personally and it took a few additional years to completely recover physically, mentally & emotionally. 20-year cancer survivor here. My children were small at the time when I went through it. My only advice: try to keep their days as normal as possible. Don't lie to them, they know something is wrong, but do keep it on terms they can understand. When they want to help you, then let them. The same holds true for close friends and family: they often want to help, but don't know how. Let them know how. You cannot do this on your own. Find others that have been through the same type of cancer, and their journey, and can keep it private, then share laughs and tears. Some days will be bad. Some days will be almost normal. Make sure your spouse gets care, too. Caregivers need care, too: especially emotional, but that is not your job. I wish you peace and strength.
