Catherine, Princess of Wales: I am having treatment for cancer

The Princess of Wales has been diagnosed with cancer, she has announced, in a personal video message to reassure the world: “I am going to be ok.”

The Princess is undergoing a course of preventive chemotherapy and has said she is focused on making a “full recovery”.

The cancer was identified during tests after her abdominal surgery on January 16, and she began treatment in late February.

Since then, she and the Prince have been focusing on sharing the news with their three young children and allowing the close-knit family to process it in private.

She has now chosen to share the news in a video filmed at Windsor on Wednesday, in which she has thanked the public for its support and shared her “huge shock” at the news.

I can't imagine what it must be like to be forced into making such a message, yet she has done it with an incredible dignity and grace. I hope that, in time, she is able to advocate for those less fortunate experiencing the same illness, because they often have long waits and lack of financial and other support.

I was never into the royal family subject matter as a non-brit but I must say the way she's carried herself demands utmost respect and compassion. I hope the public will be able to rein in their curiosity and let her and her family recover in peace.

Having had major abdominal surgery myself (for cancer) it would be impossible to carry out the simplest tasks for many weeks after, notwithstanding the psychological trauma of being diagnosed with cancer. Chemotherapy is a challenging treatment requiring much rest and management, avoiding stress and anything that would risk infection while the immune system is totally compromised. The journey through all these things is enormously difficult. I wish her strength to fight, and peace to get her life and health back 🙏

While both of my parents died from Cancer, since they died there are many treatments that weren't available 30+ years ago. She has had a healthy diet for years, so I'm hopeful for a recovery for her.
