The National Hurricane Center says Laura has weakened to a tropical storm, sustaining top winds of 70 mph as it moves into Arkansas Thursday afternoon.
Laura made landfall at 1 a.m. Thursday near Cameron, a 400-person community about 30 miles east of the Texas border. At landfall, the storm had 150 mph maximum sustained winds, making it the most powerful hurricane to strike the U.S. so far this year.
A Tornado Watch is in effect until 4 p.m., while a Flash Flood Watch is in effect until 7 p.m. for much of the area.
