I haven't done a whole lot of python programming, but a lot of people I know absolutely love it. Python itself does have a lot of libraries out there to use (my bf wrote a timelapse program that converts a series of images to an .avi with python).

I think Python and PyGame is a perfectly fine place to start with game development.

Why SDL?
Newcomers to game development: please stop using SDL.
Go with SFML.
SFML is simplier to use and more powerful than SDL. It is cross-platform like SDL is.
Unlike SDL, SFML supports real-time rotation and scaling. And there are really good tutorials on SFML page to learn things.

Atm I'm writing a game in C using the SDL library and a lot of resources are written in C++. Can anyone tell me if its worth the leap to move to C++? because right now I'm pretty happy with C.

I think people get the idea of learning new languages if you know older ones from how if you were a "windows power user" and you go to Linux, it contradicts everything you learned and is a pain the ass. There's also going from Imperial to Metric and Qwerty to Dvorak.

but the worst it could do for programming is a two month learning curb after you get good at coding with your first language. After you get over "why can't can I use goto?" or "C Sucks, there's no classes!", you'll be fine.
