I tried that with a gigantic watermelon, I managed to pull it off only on one side, the other side was too much.
Then I took the slices and cut them into poles.

Don't like this method as much as the wedges or triangles. Only the centre pieces have some of the sweetest part of the watermelon. Everyone else looses out.
