My mom suffered from hepatic encephalopathy for years, it was awful.
She stopped taking her lactulose purposefully and did some damage to her brain. A drug called Zaxine gave me more time with her but after her liver cancer came back again she said she was done. She passed away peacefully during a snowstorm 5 weeks before her first grandchild arrived. I miss her so much

13 years ago at 27 I was hospitalized for liver failure. I spent 3 months in the hospital at death's door. My ascites was so bad they couldn't get a good image of my liver so they had to do multiple biopsies through my jugular vein. My ammonia was so sky high that I didn't know what city or state I was in, who the president was, or how old I was. I was hallucinating the craziest things. I did however know that both my parents were still alive and I couldn't die before them and leave them heartbroken...so as much as I wanted to let go (had a crazy crossing over moment, which to be fair could have been my high ammonia) I hung on. My husband was my greatest advocate and without him I firmly believe the doctors would have given up. I had to learn how to walk again, talk again, and write again. I still go for fibro scans 2x a year to check my liver. It has gone from stage 4 to stage 2. I no longer take lactulose after 10 years and my blood work is relatively normal. I haven't had a sip of alcohol in 12 years. At the time I was drinking a lot but only after I was out of the hospital (when the ascites was fully gone) were they able to discover I was born with portal hypertension of my liver. So I never should have been heavily drinking in the 1st place. So for those going through this hell please don't worry about dying just focus on living. It can get better, I promise. 🙏

My mom had end stage liver disease it got so bad she could not control her body movements and as such we ended up having to take her back to the hospital where they could give her the comfort meds through iv so she could pass comfortably she only lived 24 hours after that call to 911. I miss her so very much but liver disease is a horrible thing especially for someone who never drank and got it from an inherited blood disorder

God bless you for educating everyone about the process of dying, so we can be more aware of what is actually taking place. This, in turn takes away some of the fear. We all should be there to support and help our loved one's and help bring them peace during this part of their lives. I hope you keep us updated about when your book is coming out. You are an angel here on Earth.

Thanks for explaining this. My father died of cirrhosis when I was 10, and he was apparently having hallucinations. This helps me understand this was a normal part of the process.

Liver disease is reduced to a transplant which is tough to get and also treatments. The answer is to be there. That’s a lot. My experience was all of us in the family were supportive and it’s all you can do.

Milk thistle is very good for the liver, not end stage cancer that I know of, but for everyone else, is great.

I have a friend who's in end-stage liver disease due to chemotherapy she was put on for rheumatoid arthritis.

She's being given lactulose, and it's helping her.

The Lactulose gave my Mama terrible diarrhea and she was blaming the diarrhea on the food she was eating and so she stopped eating. No matter how hard I tried to explain to her that the digestion process took hours and nothing she was eating was as she put it 'going straight through her". Unfortunately after the prescription for the Lactulose she never ate another full meal. She looked like someone with anorexia. She had a bile duct clog which caused the cirrhosis of the liver. She never drank a drop of alcohol in her entire life and found the diagnosis embarrassing to tell people because I guess she thought people were going to think she drank. So nobody but me knew how serious her condition was because aside from the confusion she looked healthy. She got the belly swelling and that with the right clothes disguised how thin she was. She was almost 80 and still working at a local college in the mail room throughout all this. I honestly don't see how her co-workers couldn't see but they didn't even after she ran her car into the side of a building trying to park her car and passed out at the door of the mail room and used the excuse it was the sun and she couldn't find the right key and get it to work in the door. She had given that college 58 working years and they were so blind and oblivious that they didn't give her a well deserved paid leave of absence for her sickness. That's one thing I have a hard time forgiving.

oh wow. holy crap. i had no idea it was used for that too! how cool!

i use it for other reasons + it's a life-saver for that. i do hate how sweet it is but better than the taste of most medications (i can't swallow pills so unfortunately i know how a LOT of medication tastes. 😂).

learned something new! thanks for that. 😊🖤✊🏾

My spouse hated the taste of lactulose, but was able to drink it when I mixed it with water and lemon juice.

I saw a Christian Brother few moments before he passed away and he was telling us that JESUS was with all of us in the room with us as he was dying due to Liver Cancer.
I hope he is in a better place when I think of him and hopefully I meet with him one day too.🙏🏻

My friend just died from liver failure at 39. I’m trying to understand what it is and why so suddenly. Two weeks ago he said he had it and now he’s gone.
