Premium VS Midrange Carbon Fibre: What's The Difference? | NEW Canyon CFR

Not all carbon fibre bikes are created equal. Manufacturers often produce frames in tiers, and Canyon have just launched a new premium level of carbon fibre. Different bike models all united under the initials “CFR”, which stands for Canyon Factory Racing. Ollie spoke to Daniel from Canyon in Germany to find out more!

Awesome tech!! That's good and all, but meanwhile, we are all waiting for the new Aeroad to be available. Hopefully, not only as a CFR version to allow for a decently priced training bike with an Ultegra Di2. Since Canyon let the cat out of the bag at the Critérium du Dauphiné, pricing, specs, and options are needed :). An Aeroad CFR, however, might easily be able to put Tarmac the shame as a lightweight aero climbing hybrid.

I am looking forward to the direct comparison against the Tarmac and Madone.

There’s an old saying in bike manufacturing: It can be lightweight, durable, or cheap. Pick two.

It would be good to discuss tolerances with bike manufacturers, as we have seen too many cases of problems; particularly in the bottom bracket area.

How does Canyon handle the Fed Ex driver that throws my new high modulus bike over the fence?

Surprisingly still visible cables... I was expecting full integration for top of the range bikes...

My ultimate cf sl is already so light and nimble, can't imagine what this will feel like! The thickness of a soda can blew my mind.

Premium VS Midrange Carbon Fibre: What's The Difference? About $2000

Here's a question the industry needs a push on: With the limited to non-recyclability of Carbon Fibre, is it ethical / sustainable to ride / buy / sell carbon bikes & components? All very nice, lite, stiff, pretty, but what are the carbon footprints of these products and what happens to them when we've done with them? I've just bought my first carbon frame, and am thinking of selling it on again to replace with custom built steel for this very reason. My gut feel is that with the industry keeping very quiet on these issues, it means they realise it's not very sustainable / ethical.

Don’t distract from the fact that a haircut is much needed at this point 💇🏻

Decided to edit this comment to make the intended point, rather than bring up people's issues with a specific individual...

I'd be interested for Canyon to send a small selection of random frames to independent testers to really see what the quality of their frames is. High modulus carbon fibre means nothing if the manufacturing quality and tolerances is poor... Claiming they scan each frame to meet their standards means nothing if their standards aren't high enough

This probably one of Canyons most aesthetic looking bikes ever especially that silver one 😍😍

Canyon is finally coming to Canada in the Spring of 2021. Can't wait to order a bike.

Another question could be about material robustness in terms of lateral forces on the 0, 6 mm frame material. Think about the frame leaning with the top tube against a hard edge. Or a tool that you accidentally drop and it would hit the down tube or one of the seat stays. The performance of the bike might be great, but it is also important that you cannot handle the bike with silk gloves all the time.

How is it that Canyon have zero stock of any bikes right now, and zero communication about what is going on with their manufacturing but they can produce a bike like this that most people cannot afford?

Here's my question for Canyon that I hope you'll ask for the rest of us: 'How much force perpendicular to the 0.6 mil CFR carbon can it withstand before cracking?'

This is their “newest, best, lightest carbon Fibre ever”. Yet, the CFR EPS is 300g heavier than the Evo of the former generation? Even though they kept the tires, the saddle, the cockpit and the seat post, and chose a lighter group set and wheelset. Okay, well then!

I’ll probably love it as much as my Endurace CF SLX 9.0 with AXS!

Thanks for this video! The CFR looks really cool!! Question for Canyon: Why didn't they go for fully-integrated cables? I see some cables in the cockpit.
