CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) tries to speak Klingon to the outpost monitor.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
The plot involves a peace conference between the Federation of Planets and the troublesome Klingons. The Klingons are hoping to perform a little damage control after triggering a mining disaster on one of their moons; their spokesman is the seemingly contrite General Chang (Christopher Plummer). All negotiations abruptly cease when a Klingon vessel is attacked, and Capt. Kirk (William Shatner) and Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) are accused of the crime. As they stand trial for murder, Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Vulcanian trainee Lt. Valeris (Kim Cattrall) try to locate the real culprits. It turns out that Kirk and McCoy are victims of a conspiracy to foment further hostilities between the Good Guys and the Klingons.

Love that another bridge officer was motioning for them to laugh with the Klingons to further sell it. After all Klingons love to have a hearty laugh.

according to interviews and such Nichelle Nichols (who plays Uhura) made the same statement to the director, that she would know the language of one of the Federation's key enemes and wouldn't need books, but the director insisted on keeping the scene in as he thought it was funny.

I always thought this scene would have been better (or funnier) if they were caught off guard by the Klingon watch post and were stalling while waiting for Uhura to arrive. Once she gets there she quickly takes over and pulls off a convincing Klingon persona that intimidates the Klingons on the other side and has the whole bridge crew looking at her in awe.

The film had subtitles which made it funny, it showed how bad Uhura's Klingon was. But this has no subtitles -- I don't know why they took them out. They are there in the original film.

CROSSING THE KLINGON BORDER AT MORTAGH OUTPOST THREE:
[The officer at the Morska outpost is definitely speaking with an unusual accent, and might be using what the core of the empire would consider archaic speech. For example, when he was referring "that ship", he clearly said Dujvetz. There's no tz sound in "High Klingon" (as we study it on this list); it's apparently a dialectical variant of tlh. (ghunchu'wI')]
"The original script for Star Trek VI (well, the earliest version that I saw, anyway) had the English translations for the lines spoken by the Klingon at the Morska listening post in a peculiar kind of English to show that it was a different way of speaking. As the filming proceeded, the character changed somewhat so that he became an inattentive Klingon rather than merely a Klingon from some different region, but we kept the nonstandard dialect anyway.
