This movie was a Cold War epic, thinly disguised as a Shakespeare play, even more thinly disguised as a a Star Trek movie.

I saw this opening night at midnight. There were people dressed in Star Trek uniforms, people in full Klingon armor. You have to understand, we'd lived through about 4 years of Captain Picard's diplomacy-first command style...and the crowd in that theater was bloodthirsty. When Sulu ordered, "Target that explosion and fire!" everyone in the theater went absolutely berserk! The packed house was on their feet cheering! To this day, the best movie experience I've ever had!

“I’d give real money if he’d shut up.”
I quote this way more often than I should. 😂

This intensity of which Sulu says, “then fly her apart” confirms what I’ve always felt—Sulu is a bad ass.

"CRY HAVOC AND LET SLIP THE DOGS OF WAR!" You can't tell me Christopher Plummer didn't enjoy shouting that! Spinning around in that seat like a giddy kid at recess!

I saw this in the theaters when it came out, practically everyone cheered at the end of this scene. One of the very best in the entire series, rivaling only that of Star Trek II.

I love the consistency of how Klingon ships are built. They always blow up exactly the same way.

Christopher Plummer was absolutely spectacular as general Chang. I always liked him in any movie he was cast in.

06:11 The best “Fire!” ever.

Also,

Chang: To be or not to be.
Arnold Schwarzenegger as Hamlet: Not to be.

One thing I really like about this scene, is how the bird of prey fires on the Enterprise from so many different positions. It gives the sense the ship is flying all around the Enterprise so they couldn't figure out its position. Then when Kirk fires the torpedo, it moves around in swerves, retracing the path of the Bird of Prey, just like the firing positions of the ship. It really gives the scene a sense of playing out in 3 dimensions.

The look Chang's sudden realization that the plan just got flushed down the toilet the second the Enterprise fires a single torpedo is priceless and very telling of the character. He knew right then that if they're just firing a single torpedo in a random direction that the Enterprise had nullified the advantage of the cloak and he was likely doomed, even before the torpedo started corkscrewing around seeking his ship.

The Enterprise going full reverse made him suspicious too. This guy was very cautious and astute for a Klingon.

Also I guess there was no budget for phasers in this movie. Had I been Kirk I would have ordering phaser fire in the general direction of where the torpedoes appeared from like Riker did against the Scimitar.

You even see how the Excelsior is superior to the good ol´ Connie. Even with full shields the first Torpedo from the klingons left burning marks on the hull of the Enterprise. Meanwhile the shields of the Excelsior absorb the whole energy of the torpedo impact.

The little smile on Sulu's face after the Klingon ship was hit says everything he's thinking.
:::That man never ceases to amaze me.:::: "Target that explosion and fire."

The pause after the Enterprise reverses, and questioning if they detected the bird of prey, was such a wonderful detail

This scene always made me tear up. Something about the build-up. The Enterprise, old but battle-hardened enduring a massive pounding. And then suddenly everyone's reaction aboard when Excelsior gets hit with that first torpedo. It hits me right in the feels.

Wrath of Khan gets all the love and praise, and it deserves it for being a great movie, but The Undiscovered Country is the best Trek film in my opinion.

The Klingon sniper was played by Rene Auberjonois, aka Odo of DS9.

The excelsior’s shields completely absorb that photon. What a tank 😮

Each key character at their best:
Scotty in the engine room, Bones and Spock modifying the torpedo, Chekhov at weapons, Uhura at Comms trying to locate the bird of prey, Sulu arriving in the nick of time on board Excelsior, and of course Kirk at his best in the captain’s chair.

This was absolutely exhilarating on the big screen. Wish it would get a big screen re-release like The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan occasionally get.
