About This Video:

This MacBook Pro seems to have a problem on the motherboard with the ISL9240 which is not letting the computer charge. I bought an iPhone battery charging case hoping to use an ISL chip from it to replace the one on the MacBook Pro. But first I tried reflowing the current ISL chip to see if that would change anything. Spoiler: it didn't. Next, I tried to track down exactly where the shorts were coming from, which I think I finally narrowed down to a shorted CPU (unless I'm missing something). So it looks like I won't be able to fix this MacBook Pro but now I do have a good number of replacement parts in case I decide to buy another broken computer!

I bet Louis Rossman could tell you exactly what's wrong with it in about 5 seconds. Then he will drill a hole through the motherboard and it will work again. The guy is a wizard I swear.

Ripping apart the case to get the charging chip was epic! Apple clearly did not want anyone harvesting parts.

Really interesting channel this, and at least your honest when you don’t manage to fix stuff. Doing a better job at recycling electronics than most, keep up the good content

I am glad to see you delving into other components as well as explaining the process as it adds much more interesting content.

From watching a ton of laptop repair videos, it seems if water damaged you stand the best chance with disgnosing if the original corrosion can be seen and then work out what this would have impacted via schematics and tracing. Once someone has messed with the item I'd keep well away as you are searching for a needle in a haystack. Thanks for these videos. Admire your patience.

I have this great old office chair that unfortunately would sink and the faux leather on the armrests had peeled off, so I was thinking of replacing it... but then I just realized I could replace the piston and reupholster the armrests and now it's good as new. Right to repair is so important; I hope Apple changes their tune on it eventually. Thanks for the video! As Louis would say: I hope you learned something.

I love all your bad decisions. Makes for great vids. BTW I like you're adoption of the "half split" troubleshooting method. They taught us that in Naval Electronics School and it really shows you the direction to go.

The best way to figure out shorts is to keep a static point (ground point) and figure out the closest point where it has the lowest resistance. Generally either a chip or bad solder due to liquid damage. Either way you will get the smallest resistance at the shorted point.

Or just run several amps and look through a thermal camera. Or even more amps and wait for the smoke :)
