We must all be aware of the “word-concept fallacy” when reading church history or discussing with Christians in other denominations. Just because someone uses the same word as you, doesn’t mean they have the same concept in mind.

How arrogant or ignorant a person must be to think they can earn or work their way to God.

My calendar scripture reading for today was Luke 10:16-21: He said to them, "Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."

Very timely your upload today. Boldness comes not from rejoicing in that we were given authority over evil but that God has already won and we are covered by Him who destroyed death.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭8‬-‭9‬

"Not taught by a single person for 1500 years." Uhhh, Paul?

Durbin should do a debate with Tim Staples. Or anyone from that show

The *Protestant* doctrine of justification sola fide (i.e. by the imputed, alien righteousness of Christ to your legal account) is completely absent from the fathers. Just because someone said the phrase “faith alone” doesn’t mean they meant it in the same way Protestants do.

I wonder how many listeners are aware that they are talking about 2 different things.

"You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. " James 2:24 Shhhh!!!

"Saved by grace through faith alone" is one of the most dangerous doctrines out there, based on a single text taken out of context."He who loves Me will keep My commands." Doesn't get much simpler than that.

Good points Jeff, so the earliest church fathers were in line with Paul. I like the way Greg Lourie puts it, we aren't saved by faith and works, but by a faith THAT works.

Not by the works of righteousness which we have done but according to His mercy He saved us

The Catholic Church doesn't teach faith and works. It teaches that with faith we have works.

if you keep reading from Clement of Rome, in the next chapter, he continues to explain the Catholic position.

Don’t confuse justified by faith, with justified by “faith alone”. These aren’t the same thing.

This is where Protestants have a far better understanding than Catholics regarding Salvation, not Christ plus works but only Christ.
The real good works comes afterwards which are the fruits of a changed heart.

James 2:14: "What use is it, my brothers, for a man to say that he has faith, if he does nothing? will such a faith give him salvation?" and 2:17: "Even so faith without works is dead."

It also says "Faith without works is dead", it also says "...not everyone calling on my name will be saved... I will say I knew you not." Jesus' own words.
James 2.17 - 26; Matt 7: 21-23.
Faith by itself is not enough.

If works were required, you'd be earning redemption and it wouldn't be Grace.
