I wouldn’t have been able to continue after seeing people so strongly connect to the reading. I would’ve been flooded with guilt and shame, but the charlatans that Derren is trying to expose don’t seem to mind manipulating people’s emotions for profit.

This had to have been difficult for him, but I’m glad that he was able to demonstrate how effective cold reading can appear. The so-called “psychics” who take advantage of these kinds of people are among the worst.

It's fascinating seeing people talking afterwards, how they've taken in the accurate details and forgotten the other general comments. The woman at 4:56 saying "He just mentioned specific things like him passing away on our anniversary, the fact that we were very close because we were engaged to be married, and he said I had silly pets, which is true; I have two aquariums."

What he actually said was that someone passed away "on a birthday or an anniversary or something like that" - he never said it was her anniversary, but that's what she latched onto.

"I think you got very close" - he never mentioned engagement or marriage, so this applies to any emotional connection.

"and you've got a silly pet" - she turned this plural and said "silly pets", because that applies to her situation. But this could as easily have been a hyperactive dog or anything like that.

Obviously I'm not trying to 'debunk' what Derren is doing here, because he admits himself that it's a trick, and I certainly couldn't do it, but I think this side-by-side comparison really shows how less specific 'mediums' are compared to what we take away from them. These people are eager to receive messages from 'the other side', and they'll take any hint at that message and make it fit.

During the selection phase, plenty of time for Derren’s team to ask them personal questions and forward details to Derren (who has a fantastic memory).
It would be interesting to see Derren try this on random people off the street, and not people who had been
PREVIOUSLY SELECTED. (Two key words here)



How on earth would it be possible to deduce by body language, tics, facial expression or so-called “cold reading” that someone has a “silly pet” when this person is in a dark, solemn environment, thinking of the death of a loved one?
