My preference is first to derive the law of cosines <apart> from the Pythagorean Theorem and <then> to show the Pythagorean Theorem to be simply a special case of the law of cosines, as the included angle in the cross-product term approaches 90 degrees, thus zeroing out that last term.
The law of cosines can be derived from a simple vector analysis, starting with the definition of the dot product, and independently of the Pythagorean Theorem.
