The fact that Japanese traditional dish is actually KFC all along is the biggest plot twist of my life.

Christmas in Japan is considered more of a couples holiday than a family holiday. A traditional Christmas dessert in Japan is their strawberry shortcake.

KFC Japan just... did an advertorial psyop and it worked a million times better than they could have ever hoped, which is as impressive as it is terrifying

I'm Japanese and I can confirm it's true. In christmas night, so many people eat KFC or other chiken, and dessert is strawberry shortcake.

Damn kfc marketing team went crazy in Japan. I don’t even think about fast food during Christmas or new years

I remember my elementary school class was doing a Christmas around the world day where each kid was assigned a place and was tasked on creating a dish. I got Japan so I did some research and discovered everything mentioned in this video. On the day of the event, my teachers didn't believe it and thought I was lazy and gave me a 0 for the project.

KFC: in Christmas we all eat KFC in America.
Japanese: ok let's celebrate Christmas in kfc

In addition to that Christmas is seen more as a romantic holiday between lovers than a family holiday.

The actual founder of KFC Japan admitted in a 2020 interview that he regretted making KFC a Christmas tradition in Japan

The KFC meal the Japanese eat on Xmas is a lot fancier than a bucket of fried chicken. They have special meals for that day that are actually a bit fancy.

My sister was learning Japanese and she entered a chat program to video call people from Japan to practice-
So they asked her where she was from, she says Kentucky, and apparently Japanese people refer to KFC as just “kentucky” so they though my sister was from a fast food restaurant 💀💀

Should've also put some strawberry shortcake! That is usually eaten on Japan as well for Christmas celebration

As a Japanese, I can confirm this is 100% legit

Here's a bit of history on this:

My understanding is that there was a western (British, iirc) military officer stationed in Japan who wanted Turkey for his family's Christmas dinner, but back then it was super duper difficult to find in Japan. Closest he could get was KFC, and it snowballed from there, until the "Kentucky for Christmas" slogan was born!
Now KFC Japan does special Christmas combo boxes, and some people even preorder them! There's a "christmas cake" included along with the standard KFC items too.

(I'm an Asian Studies major, tho taking a long break from college rn. I did a presentation when on the board of what was basically a Japanese culture club but with an emphasis on connecting exchange students with on-campus students so they can learn from each other. I'm not certain of the possibly apocryphal origin story for this anymore, since I did this casual presentation a few years ago now.)
