Woodturning ShearScraping Wood Bowl Turning Bowl Gouge Video
Shear scraping is a very excellent refining technique to leave the bowl exterior very smooth. Using the shear scrape technique can be used to both finish the surface and make subtle refinements to the wood bowl shape.

We will be using a swept-back bowl gouge with a front nose bevel of 55°. You can use any bowl gouge profile you'd like, as long as it has wings to use for the shear scraping.

Once you learn this technique, the exterior of your bowls will be greatly improved compared to almost any other final turning technique.

I have done shear scraping, but did not know your basic rule to have the gouge sitting at a 90 degree angle to the tool rest, and also did not know to not do it on the inside of the bowl.
