Remake your first film as of right now and use all of what you know now to make it.

That takes guts sir. I wouldn't do it. Picture 35 years ago, 5 minutes of squirrels spinning around on film. Yeah. That happened. I figured there was no where to go but up from there...even my Mom thought it sucked. :)

One of the reasons I love watching amateur short films and fan films is because of the cringe

Dude you predicted whiplash. The scenes where she keeps saying 'stop' ... "Not quite my tempo"

I've just been binge watching his videos in preparation of making my own. Well, wish me luck!

It's interesting having watched a bunch of your How-to/informational videos and seeing how you made every single one of those mistakes in your first film.  You know, questionable sound, lighting no good, blank walls all that kinda stuff.  You did a good thing showing everyone.  It's a great tool for encouragement and just letting people know what the real deal is.

Thank you for showing us that. I think it is really important for people to see and understand the learning curve. so much in your society nothing is released unless it is as polished as possible or people make great efforts to remove there past works from public view. Which gives an unrealistic expectation of perfection and individual performance. Thank you ..

How about a review of the film to point out all the things u did wrong.. and do it again the way it should be done?... and now that I think about it.. How would you feel about reviewing our short films pointing out our mistakes and how to improve?

Just directed my first shot. I thought "how could it be any worse than some of the other shit out there?"...

...Oh god

This makes me more hopeful. Thanks for sharing. One thing to remember is even when our films are bad is that we as low to no budget short film makers have taken on a huge task with even the shortest film. You've kept on and now provided a bit of perspective for those of us asking "Wow, am I ever going to be good at this? Am I in the wrong field?" Anyway, keep up the work, I just found your channel today and am enjoying the info you share.

it wasn't THAT bad. I mean, see what he's getting at but for a first timer I kinda liked it. it was short, had good characters and ended on a kind of cliffhanger. the only problem was the jump cut scenes but, well what did you expect. it was your first time

If this was a French movie, it would be a hit!

I feel like as bad as most people's first shorts are, if they stick with it, you usually advance really quickly. Because you make so many mistakes and the people who stick with it are really passionate about it, the next film they make they avoid those problems and it's ten times better. The learning curve for filmmaking is exponential. You hardly know anything your first film, then a few later and the improvement is drastic. Then you sort of level out. But it's pretty interesting to see the improvement.
I mean just four/five years ago you did that, and now you have your first feature touring film festivals. It's great to see.

Holly mother of holly mothers! Thank you so much Darious! Showing this short is what every movie maker should do! We all want to shot great videos, amazing movies but never dare to start because our firsts always look so awkward.... but if we keep on, it'll get better... I know it's a basic lesson but you are one of the rare pros to give it with a real personal example! You are a great teacher and a great artist, because you dare everything and because you don't fear mistakes! Thank you again!

I agree with most in that it wasnt too bad at all. The short film was very similar to your introduction with the message, do not give up, just do what you love doing and you will get there. Subbed.

Easily the best thing you've ever shown, thank you for being brave. Actually thought the cuts weren't that bad. You're the man.

I uploaded my first film last year and exactly as you said, after a few weeks I hated it and I always find myself re-watching it over and over. The problem I had was that I put all my eggs in one basket for my very first. I used all my cool ideas and shots on one project and built a story around them. The end product was an overly ambitious attempt at a full feature length detective drama within 30 mins. I've come to the conclusion (after almost a year) that it was ambitious for a first time film and you either love and laugh at your first, or see it as trial and error, take from it what you did 'wrong' and what you did 'right' and try again to make something better.

I have a lot of respect for you putting your earlier work out there for us rookies to learn that it's all about practice. Ive watched all of your how to videos multiple times a piece and it's clear that you've gone from a film maker with a dream to professional artist and educator. On the real bro, I appreciate your work. This channel has been more helpful in achieving my film goals than any other how to channel out there. Keep up the good work bro.
