In the study, the scientist had patients make note of what time they decided to press the button using a clock. It takes time to dart your eyes to the clock and make a mental note of the time, and by the time you do that the clock may have changed. If you press the button at 700ms into the second, dart your eyes and make a note, then that would total to 1000ms, aka a second.

I’ve heard this hypothesis before, and it honestly always confuses me. It only makes sense if you first stipulate that your subconscious is not a part of you.
Yes I was in the decision-making process. My subconscious made the decision and then I became a consciously aware of that decision. Our brain handles so much input. If we were forced to categorise every little thing we took note of on a conscious level we would never be able to hear ourselves think. Also of course we’re going to react to outside stimuli to make decisions. Sure I never had the choice to be born in this time and place. Okay, and?
We are our brains.
I have two cats. They react to stimuli in a much different way to me. Even though we have similar environments going on in my house. The way they interact with the house is completely different from how I interact with the house and the things in it. That is because our bodies and our brain are different.
I think a lot of people try to separate the concept of free will from the concept of predestination too much. Sure everything is predestined in the sense that you cannot control how you immediately react to everything around you.
But I have always loved the saying, “You cannot control your first thought, but you can always control your second.”
That is what free will is. It is making the conscious choice not to just react to outside stimuli. It is making a conscious choice to doublecheck your own first thought. That is why people are capable of change.
