Toyota RAV4 Prime EXTREME COLD Review

Bob Pellerin (CTOBOB) returns to answer more questions about the Toyota RAV4 Prime SE in very cold temperatures. When the temperature drops to -30°C (-22°F) it's normal for the PHEV to run on gas. Contrary to what you might have heard, the heating with the ICE is adequate for the extreme cold. Doing 6.5L/100KM (36MPG) is pretty good considering the weight of the SUV. It's great to drive on snow and ice with the AWD and traction control there to keep you safe.

Temperatures were from -18°C (0°F) down to -30°C (-22°F). The RAV4 prime is impacted by temperatures when you drop below 10°C (50°F).

Update: The terrific dealer I have offered to replace the headlights. I'm not sure if that's a necessity. What do you think?

Thank you for all of your reviews so far of the SE. I’ve been looking into the XSE myself for winter driving purposes. Was also quite surprised to see you driving through my old hometown!

Great review! When comparing to a ICE gasoline car it is easy to forget that even traditional cars will have a worst mileage in winter than summer

Thanks for this cold weather video. I live in Colorado where we get as cold as -30 F. At times. And in Dec.-Feb. -15 to 0 F frequently.

Thanks for this. I drove my new RAV4 prime in the cold for the first time today. Well by cold, I mean -6 Celsius. There was a not-yet- heard noise coming from underneath the hood along with a vibration through the gas pedal and I’m wondering if that was the heat pump.

I read the ICE will come on when ambient temp is below specific value because the heat pump is not efficient below that temperature. I forget the specific temp. I also read the ICE comes on when above 84 MPH.

Can I ask what oil viscosity you recommend?

how about then the ICE comes on - doesn't it need to be heated up first using the block heater?

Hey Bob, did you get your RAV4 prime hybrid treated with anti rust for our long brutal winters in Canada? I just received my 2023 RAV4 limited hybrid and hearing different opinions whether or not to get the treatment done. TIA

Have you had any issues with your Prime throwing errors when it gets cold? I got a check engine light with "Hybrid system malfunction, reduced power mode" after it dropped to about -20. Went away when it warmed up to 0C before I brought it to the dealership. Still planning to bring it in as it's still under warranty.

Did you ever take the prime in for the frost on inside of the headlights to get it re sealed or is that to be expected

If you drive on EV mode to nearly deplete the Ev battery, the combustion engine kicks in. My question is: if you continue to drive for a few hours, would the EV battery be recharged?

Hey Bob are you in Alberta? How much did your electric bill go up when you started charging your rav4 prime?

What is the temp that the ICE kicks in?

-18 is not extreme cold, it's just winter. Temperatures below -40 I'd call extreme cold.
