I Had an Engine Out!

Machines break. It’s inevitable.

But when you’re in the air, you’ve got a lot less time to fix them.

My fuel selector valve malfunctioned, cutting off the fuel supply to my engine from the aerobatic fuel tank.

Not ideal.

Luckily, I managed to switch back to my main tank fast enough to get the engine going again and land safely at the nearest airfield.

The airplane is fixed now, but it really drove home a lesson I’ve learned many times:

Know your airplane!

When things go sideways, seconds can mean the difference between life and death. The better you know your aircraft, the faster you’ll react when it matters.

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened, and it probably won’t be the last. I’ve been in a lot of planes, and each one has thrown me a curveball at some point.

But this time, it was my first time flyng my friend Luke in the Hiperbipe — and so he just happened to be filming.

The fact that he kept recording after the engine quit?

Still blows my mind. 😂

Question, does that plane feed fuel through gravity or with a fuel pump?
