Grace periods for implementing post-Brexit checks on goods going from Great Britain to Northern Ireland are at the centre of tensions between the EU and UK.

The UK has unilaterally increased these grace periods, which allow for lighter touch controls on some goods.

The EU says this is a breach of the Northern Ireland Brexit deal and is planning legal action.

Newsnight’s Nick Watt reports.

This is what happens when part of your country is actually part of an other country.

The solution it's clear. Ireland reunites and the UK keeps their fuck-up for itself.

Everyone involved is fully aware that The Northern Ireland issue could be sorted out with one move.
Northern Ireland voted REMAIN.
If they want to sort the issue out, put the Protocol to a vote and it will be carried.
They London government are fully aware that it will be carried.
That's why they don't put it to a vote.
The people of Northern Ireland WANT the protocol.

I just enjoy seeing England enjoying their temper tantrum of independence, and am hoping that they are banned from the EU for the next 50 years even if they would want to rejoin. Ireland (the proper Ireland as a whole) however has all the support of the simple people like me.

The DUP in a nutshell:

They want a border

They don't want Irish sea border because GFA. (supposedly)

Want border in Ireland (despite definitely violating GFA)

This is not about GFA, this is about giving the middle finger to the republic and being awkward.

Do the Conservatives realize what an agreement actually is. Both sides had to agree when they signed it.

Are we forgetting the UK stole 6 counties of Ireland and refuse to acknowledge what they did was wrong and now have planted seeds of unionism in the North that has caused so much trouble up there - when China do this to their surrounding regions they sow the same seeds of nationalism something has to give - Unite Ireland - and repatriate the British people back to the UK if they love the Uk that much. And Give the people of Scotland the referendum they ask for.

7:37 Notice the American representative completely ignored the question about _affecting any chance of a UK/US free trade deal_ … [because the interviewer totally didn't notice that her question was not answered].

So in other words, the UK can forget about getting a US free trade deal.

As always: nobody can answer that question of "Where do you do the checks? How do you solve the problem of the border between Ireland and N.Ireland?"
It has been the unsolvable question of BREXIT right from the start.

This is the horror-show building up for the last five years. I used to ask Brexit voters here in England, what they thought would be done about the three hundred mile land border with the EU. It wasn't even a factor they considered. Since then the British government has been inept, the DUP has voted against May's 'solution', and Johnson has incoherently dealt with the matter. So that now graffiti has appeared at the port of Larne threatening the port workers there. Things are looking ominous - the Brexit fallout will be bad enough without re-kindling the Northern Ireland conflict. I grew up in Northern Ireland, experienced the Troubles from the beginning through their height, and would wish the same situation on no-one.

I would like to know what public opinion is on this.
I think most people now believe Ireland should be a united country
The UK government is holding on to its last part of the empire.

Bojo had years to work out a solution to the Irish boarder problem. The fact that this is the mess he ended up with tells you all you need to know about Johnson's Brexit.
