Definitely wasn't expecting a reaction to a Mumbo video, and an old one at that, but I'm here for it!

The reason he used obsidian is because it cannot be moved by pistons, and the slime blocks he used would have moved them and broken everything had they been normal blocks. He wasn't really going for aesthetics, he almost never does. He generally only makes contraptions as complicated as they need to be.

Mumbo jumbo never fails to surprise me 😂

Should have had light blue stained glass surrounding the reactor below to represent the water since you can't have water around redstone

Very fun reaction! I was actually quite surprised by how knowledgeable he was about the inner workings of a nuclear reactor, given that he has no formal education in nuclear power or engineering (he studied computer science and programming if I'm not mistaken). Quite obviously, MumboJumbo has little experience in this field and is limited by the canvas of the base version of Minecraft. Just to clarify, there's essentially this ore called 'redstone' in the game, which can be crafted into various circuit components, such as pistons, dispensers, or comparators, allowing the player to build some fun and useful contraptions that automate certain parts of the game, which is Mumbo's favourite part of the game. The closest it has to engineering is probably electronics systems and automation, since these redstone circuits are very similar to logic diagrams, as they both use Boolean algebra. Mumbo had a whole series of these 'pretend' builds, ranging from realistic topics such as this one to fantasy and sci-fi, which provided a way for other less tech-savvy players to add some playful builds into their Minecraft worlds to make them feel more alive. These days, he mostly focuses on playing on the Hermitcraft multiplayer server with his friends, but still does some redstone videos from time to time.

The whole top and bottom control rods thing is most likely due to Minecraft's limitations: pistons can only pull an adjacent block, not a column.

Also it would be interesting to see you try Industrial Craft mod for Minecraft. It has a reactor planner and simulator and the whole "plan fuel and heat dissipation layout" is neat and maybe even realistic

He is using obsidian because when the pistons push the green blocks, the green blocks stick to all adjacent blocks and move those blocks as well. Obsidian is one of few blocks, that green blocks can't stick to. Obsidian also takes a while to break in survival mode, which is probably the reason Mumbo is associating it with something hard and industrial-like. Obsidian is also basically completely explosion immune.

edit: The stuff he made the control rods out of isn't affected by gravity. And the double-piston extenders have a larger risk of failing upon retracting. They basically cannot fail at extiending (which in this case would be inserting the fuel rods) unless someone has sabotaged the wiring. Retracting requires a bit of timing which could potenially mess up if the game is lagging a lot or something. And it takes longer to retract than it takes to extend.

Illogical.

1:31-Actually, 31% of redstone is URANIUM, so technically all redstone builds use nuclear power.

the issue is in minecraft "fuel rods" Dont have gravity or electro magnets so this kinda makes sense for the limitations and different phyiscs of MC

I love how fission power production is little more than the nuclear equivalent of pushing something up a hill and letting it roll down and extracting the power from it. However, maybe it's more accurate to say that you make a funky Jenga tower of unstable nuclei and let it knock itself down.

Never watched a Mumbo video this old before... Certainly didn't expect to see one on this channel in general, haha

This was a great deal of fun to watch. I've watched tons of Mumbo's vids, in the past. Really enjoyed hearing your take on his Minecraft reactor. Thanks. :)

Please try Industrial Craft mod for Minecraft. It has a reactor planner and simulator and the whole "plan fuel and heat dissipation layout" is neat and maybe even realistic. Also nuclear accidents in IC are spectacular

the pistons are just for moving blocks since minecraft doesn't have steam powered turbines.

Tyler. Good job brother 👏. You're quite literally the only "reaction " channel I'll watch. I don't know why you even came across my feed..but I'm glad you did.. Kyle hill has got a new "pro nuclear " upload that you'll love . And "the science asylum " 's newest is absolutely awesome. It's actually a "wife reacts " video. It's extremely enlightening. And it would/will be you reacting to reactions. And he ( Nick Lucid) and his wife ( Awkward Em) are hysterical and wonderful to see interacting together. His "clone " gags are frikin awesome. And he's frikin brilliant!! I believe you'll be hooked. Much love young blood. Keep up the great work 👍 👏

I live an hour from Davis-Besse. The whole area is a wildlife preserve and it's beautiful. It also has the most ridiculous right angle in the highway that goes by it.
