ORICO Tool Free 3.5' to 5.25' Hard Drive Bay (1105SS) Unboxing, Installation, Overview

In today's review we are going to take a look at the "ORICO Tool Free 3.5" to 5.25" Bay Hard Disk Drive HDD Mounting Bracket Adapter Metal Kit for 5.25" CD-ROM Slot - Black(1105SS)". This HDD bay can be bought off Amazon for $17.99. In this video I am going to unbox the product, install it into my desktop, and run crystal disk mark to ensure that the interface within the bay does not cause any sort of speed reductions.

The overall quality of the drive bay is very good for its price. The outer casing is composed of steel and the front face plate is made out of sturdy ABS plastic. There was actually no give in the structure of the enclosure when I attempted to flex it with my hands. Throughout the entire overview I only ran into two small problems with the drive. The first issue I had was the fact that the power button is really awkward to use, it goes inside the casing when in the ON position making it very hard to reach. The second problem I had with the case was the fact that the wires leading to the indication lights on the front were just slapped on with hot glue, this is not horrific but there are better ways of doing this.

Installing the HDD bay was simple, just put it into your PC like you would any other 5.25" drive (CD / DVD / BR ect..). Once it is in you case plug in the SATA connectors and install your drive. My WD Caviar black hard drive slid into the bay with ease. The ORICO HDD bay has a mechanical arm to the rear which pushes the drive out when you open the bay door, this design works very well. I was also able to slide a 2.5" SSD into the bay with little effort, just keep in mind that the drive must be slimmer than 7mm and that it might be a little tricky to remove the drive once it is installed.

Using Crystal Disk Mark I concluded that the interface within the drive bay did not cause any reduction in overall transfer speeds. When I tested my ADATA SP550 while directly hooked up to the motherboards SATA II ports and then tested it through the enclosure there was no deviation in overall speeds.

I bought this internal bay mainly to decrease the temperatures of my hard drives inside my system and it did just that. When stacked on top of each other they could reach up to 55C but now they do not go above 40C and the drive within the enclosure runs a bit cooler than the drive in my case's drive bay.

This drive bay boasts exceptional quality for its price and great functionality. I would definitely recommend it if you are in the market for a 5.25" 3.5" HDD bay.

I bet that power switch setup is on purpose to keep you from accidentally hitting the switch and shutting the drive off during a read/write process.

That power button is actually a positive not a negative as it keeps people from pushing it accidentally you need to purposely push it to turn on and off . I would use the flat rear portion of a pilot pen myself as I always have one handy. same goes for the key. these are both features for when your PC is accessible for someone other then YOU to simply fuck around and start pushing buttons simply because its there. you know the type ..

Thanks for the review, I wanted to buy 2 or 3 of these HDD Bays and your video really helped in confirming the quality and how to use it. You can glue a small round rubber pad in the power button to make it stick out a little if that's what you need, and for the 2.5 inch HDDs there's an adapter from ORICO that turns them into a 3.5 inch, I'm going to buy one of those too ;)

Not bad, a bit dated looking, but it was from 2016 :-) I found your video as I was looking for how to install a 3.5 inch SATA HDD, into the free optical drive bay of my HP EliteDesk 800 G2 PC (did not come with an optical drive); you kinda skipped over the connections element (SATA data cable connection and SATA power connection) and made no mention of not touching the pins of the drive, nor of the use of an anti-static wrist cable. However, that said, I watched it all the way through, and was most impressed.

Hi. I just bought one of these yesterday, and after putting my drive into it, and plugging it into my laptop, windows (xp pro) doesn't "see" it, it doesn't auto-instal a driver. So, I am wondering, when the info booklet says windows will recognize it and instal the driver, does it mean (1) windows will recognize the Orico device itself; (2) or windows will only recognize the hard drive inside the Orico, and the instal the driver? Because it isn't happening, and I am wondering if my HD is dead.

I think zippy-tying your 3.5" hdd to the internal 5.25" bay would work better. Just sayin.
