To everyone running into the "no prefix" issue. I got around it. Download the most recent MO2 release. Do not create a prefix until you are running the MO2 installer. When running the installer you will get a dialogue that tells you how to create an instance. During this exact part of the process then go into Steam > Fallout New Vegas > Properties > Compatibility. Set to Proton 8. Run Fallout New Vegas and then exit the game. Return to MO2 and complete the install.

The issue for me seemed to be creating an instance before running the installer, rather than creating one during installation.

"Tale of two wastelands" mod can be interesting for you, too. It combines Fallout 3 and New Vegas using the New Vegas engine. With that you are able to play Fallout 3 in the Vegas engine and move from Vegas to Washington and back. You can use all mods from New Vegas. Some are even modified to use for he mod itself.

There's a workaround for the "installing on the main hard drive" situation. The files can be symlinked. So the files can exist on the SD card, but the Bethesda titles, MO, protontricks, the Deck itself, all think they're on the main drive. Essentially, the folder on the drive is just a hard shortcut to the files on the SD card. It might take a bit more backend terminal work but, it's doable.

When I got my Steam Deck I was so excited to play NV. Little did I know it would come with the same save corruption bugs that the XB360 version had way back in the day. I used this guide to install a few basic stability mods (and an alternate start mod) and so far this method is working well. Like other commenters have said, Proton 8.0 is now the preferred compatibility mode. Also, In all my searching, I never found any mods to fix the save bugs. I only found methods to minimize the chances of a save becoming corrupted. If anyone has any tips on avoiding corrupted saves, I'd love to know!
