I was probably a third or fourth-former pupil when I learnt that past perfect tense in English which might seem a bit tricky and 'weird' at first with these two 'had' in a row indeed, but when I came across it, I can remember I had had no particular difficulty to grasp it having made the perfect connection with our 'passé antérieur' in French (J'avais eu) which basically is built and structured the same way with the verb 'have' conjugated to the past followed by the past participle of the verb and which serves to express a time that preceded a certain point in the past where we 'situate' when we speak. 'the past of the past' indeed hence our denomination of 'anterior past' basically ;-)
It is also, of course, a tense to be mastered when you tackle the third conditional which you use to address a condition that was basically not realised in a past anterior to the past you are talking about:
If + past perfect, ...would + have + past participle
If I hadn't drunk so much the night before, I wouldn't have had that awful hangover last week.
If I had had a bit more time after seeing Anna's video this morning, I would have entered more into the details with a longer comment but I had to go to work. ;-)
Thank you so much Anna!
Bisous 😘🌹💞

I had a lot of troubles on this topic, perhaps because my former English teacher hadn't had explained it properly

Is it grammatically wrong to say I had breakfast, I had a shower or I went for a walk or whatever, before I went to work? That's what people usually say I think.

I'm not a native speaker but pretty fluent, yet I've never heard of 'had had' as being grammatically correct. Is this applicable to just British English or globally?
