Explanation:

Peeta's leg wound from Cato was mostly healed from the miracle cream (edit: medicine administered via hypodermic needle) that Katniss risked her life to acquire from the cornucopia banquet.

Then the mutts sliced his leg. Katniss tied a tourniquet to slow down blood flow. When applied, tourniquets should be taken off within 2 hours to minimize damage to limb. However, the gamemakers dragged out the game because they wanted Katniss to kill Cato. The mutts were just there to add horror and prolong the torture.

Then of course, the gamemakers revoked the rule change because they wanted Peeta or Katniss to eliminate the other. Refusing to harm Katniss, Peeta takes off the tourniquet (which was applied for way longer than 2 hrs) so he would bleed out and make Katniss a victor. However, because of the nightlock berries, they both lived.

So yes, Peeta lost his leg in the books, but he got to keep his life. Also, Katniss was deaf in one ear after she blew up the Career's supplies. The Capitol was able to fix her hearing, but not Peeta's destroyed leg.

I wish they had his amputation in the movie. It makes more sense for him being slower and more vulnerable later, katniss’ felt need to protect him most, and the line “if you can stop looking at me like I’m wounded, I can stop acting like it.”

I was forced to read the books for class before the movies came out in the 4th grade. I watched the movie and was wondering that the fuck happened to the leg scene.

In the 74th hunger games, Peeta was cut by Cato I think and the cut was super deep and eventually got infected despite Katniss best efforts to stop it and when they won the games the doctors chopped the infected part of Peetas leg off leaving a metal prosthetic in its place.
