For heavy line 15# or higher I use a bait casting reel. For me 20# line cast better with a bait caster. I fish in cold water(Lake Superior) bait casting reels drip cold water on my hands making my fingers freezing cold. Spinning reels hang at the bottom of rod, water drips off the reel keeping my hands warmer. I use both types equally, if I had to choose only one it would be a spinning reel. I like the bait caster because I get sick of flipping the bail on a spinning reel to cast. When casting a lot I go to the bait casting rod. Both are equally good, it’s all personal preference.

I definitely enjoy the fight more on a spinning reel than a baitcaster, the drag just feels better on the average spinning reel to me.

Don’t get me wrong, I own 4 spinning reels and have owned many more. But when it comes to lures and especially big swimbaits and jigs. The daiwa lexa and a few other reels u can’t go wrong. with the same drag as a 4K penn they can handle big baits. Just a bit of tuning and ur good to go. U can hookset much harder and it’s much more efficient to throw swimbaits and stuff. I’m for both sides I love them both!

The only thing I fish with is what my awesome uncle JC tells me to! Listen to him, people! Love you, UJ!

The maintenance thing is definitely the biggest reason I love my spinners more. I took apart my baitcaster and was absolutely astounded how many little parts are in those things. My Penn Fierce 3 is so, so much easier to take apart, clean, and lube and I’m kind of ADD about maintaining my stuff so simplicity of maintenance is huge to me. And the lack of backlashes is probably my second biggest reason, cuz I can’t cast for shit with my baitcaster no matter how I practice with it!

I've always used a spinning reel, (35 years) But, I did just completely rebuilt a conventional Penn 68 Longbeach to troll, and deep bottom drift with. I did that for My Brother, whom, I lost in Jan. We would fish together, to the wee hours of the morning, in the 70's off the bridges in the Keys...When we ran outta bait, Dad would give us chicken necks, and skin, which did catch something, but not fish... Crabs, and eels, man those were the days.
For Father's Day, I received a Wrath 8000, to do the exact same job as the Penn 68... We'll see which one is Luckier...

Spinners are all I know and I love them. I target catfish and bass. I've learned how to quit whiplash from happening and that's with conditioner on it. I just ordered a new spinning combo.

One thing you forgot to say or I didn't hear it. With a spinner you can take the knob off and place it left or right handed where as bait casters you can't.

So a spinning rod and reel can do anything I need it to do and yes a spin fisherman has more choice the a bait caster or a conventional rod and reel fisherman 😊

For the beginner fisherman I agree but sometime you will venture across the line and buy a bait caster or conventional and practice with it.
You set the spool tension for you different weight lures or sinkers and set the magnetic backlash and have absolutely no issues with it. They cast farther than spinning reels. It’s all in the setup.

I've been the same way for about the last 45- 50yrs, and I liked the price a lot better.

I use both. Very hard to get a backlash on a baitcaster if you keep your thumb lightly on the spool. I agree they are harder to maintain but luckily I have never dropped my reel in the water in 35 years of fishing.

I can pick up second hand abu 6500s for about 20 dollars. Drag washers are about 15 dollars and last years. My first ambassadeur is 35 years old and still works the same as the day I bought it. Cannot say the same for the spinning reels I have bought.

Another benefit of spinning reels is you can switch the handle to wind with your non-dominant hand. So when a fish hits the lure as it lands you dont have to switch the rod to your other hand. I do have a couple of lefthanded baitcasters but they are hard to come by where I live.

I bought a tranx and a lexa then sold all my spinning reels. Never going back. I get worked on 36 in snook on my 4K stradic and I brought up a 42 with the lexa easily. Being able to control the drag with your thumb is a game changer.

The Penn pursuit spinning reels are one of my favorites 🐟

I started out with bait casting reels but it didn't take me long. I will only occasionally take a bait caster with me now. I'm pretty much completely switched to spinning reels for saltwater. Also I'm pretty much only fishing saltwater any more.

All I could think of is the spinning reels and new rods I bought for our vacation. I told my husband we would learn a new skills. Oh boy you would have laughed. We did manage to put the line on the reels correctly, learned to cast somewhat and we did catch some fish. We need more practice, but would not have made it with a bait caster reel. There were a few snarls but we figured things out after getting frustrated a few times. I agree with your points. I don't think for us any bait casters will be in our future. Thank you for the tips.
