The knock turned out to be the crank hitting the oil pan, I must have smooshed it a bit jacking the engine up

That's a pretty fast knocking. It's something that goes fast. It sounds top-end. Hmm. It's gotta be many sludged / stuck hydraulic lifters not pumping. Because the knock is faster than one cylinder or one rod. I would drain most of the oil, top back off with white gas (kerosene)...run until hot, drain while hot. Fill back up with 100% white gas, repeat, fill with cheap oil they sell for cars that burn alot of oil, just to flush one more time. Then it should be better. If so: LUCAS oil treatment or STP oil treatment and some 10W-40.
