I definitely think Check & Mate should've been promoted as new adult rather than YA, there were surely moments that went beyond what YA usually entails. I adore the book so much, regardless.

My top book of the year was The Seven Year Slip, but The Rom-Commers was a close second. I loved hearing that you liked Funny Story. Have you thought of reading the books on her backlist? I read her whole backlist this past year and fell in love with a couple. My favorite of them was definitely A Million Junes, which is like Romeo and Juliet mixed with magical realism.

Love this video because I really wanted to see your favorites in order and to be reminded of them. As you say Ellen, with 180 books read, we’re seeing just 1 out of every 18 books you read this year. I’m new, in fact I’ve never read one to date, to the romance genre, but you are my primary guide to what romances I will
try reading, so I thank you very much for providing specific titles! I’m excited to see if I will enjoy them. Emily Henry, I’m casually compiling data in my head about her books, seeing which of her books are booktubers’ favorite, so chalk up points for “Happy Place” and “Funny Story”. And never apologize about your tastes! Anyone who tries to lord what they read over someone else is a pretentious jerk who you wouldn’t want to be friends with anyway.

For me, a few of my favorites were, “The Motel Life” by Willy Vlautin, an excellent American novelist who isn’t well known, I loved a couple Agatha Christie mysteries, “Murder on the Orient Express“ and “Cards on the Table“. My mom read all of those so I wanted to reconnect with her by reading some. I really enjoyed Cormac McCarthy‘s, “No Country for Old Men“ though I was disappointed to hear the news about McCarthy that came out recently. Lastly, a very good non-fiction book is “The Quickening“ by Elizabeth Rush about an expedition to Antarctica to check out a gigantic glacier that will give us an indication about how climate change is progressing.
