Every time I hear praise for The Ministry of Time, I am dumbfounded. The overuse of baffling metaphors and similes is just nuts. I actually created a list of them after reading the book for my own entertainment. A couple of random examples: "the air hung like an executed corpse, " "he was a dreadful dancer... Victims of hangings kicked with more vim, " "Graham visualized a cottage by the sea as a man who has walked through an abattoir visualized a shower." Huh?

I absolutely adored I Cheerfully Refuse by Leif Enger. My favorite book of the year. It is so beautifully written and is a gorgeous love letter to book lovers. The characters are so well developed, you'll miss them when you finish the book. My husband and I had the opportunity to meet Leif and his wife at an event in Minnesota this summer. They were wonderful and gracious. I can't recommend this one enough!

The Demon Of Unrest is excellent. ANY of Eric Larsons' bks. are SO WELL researched. One of my fave authors, have read many, almost all his bks. He is A journalist.

I pretty much only read older books but seeing all these one after another makes me feel like I have been missing out. Maybe 2025 will be the year that I focus on current books

I'm excited to read The Boys of Riverside. During my first year as a professor at Gallaudet, I lived in a dorm right next to the football field. (The story going around at the time is that the football huddle was invented there so opposing players would not be able to eavesdrop on their signs to each other.)

There are Rivers in the sky is amazing, it will make my top ten. The ministry of time was a bit of fun but I can barely remember it now. We solve murders was a fun audiobook. Martyr is really good, very memorable. Oh yes, James is wonderful. God of the Woods has gone onto my TBR. Happy Reading 🙂

Peace Like a River by Leif Enger is one of my favorite books. Beautiful narrative, quirky characters, mystery, family oriented and coming of age story.

I’ve added a couple of these to my wishlist. I havnt read the ministry of time but saw Kaliane Bradley speak at Bath festival and she was very funny. She wrote this originally just to entertain a small group of friends in lockdown.

Just read Richard Osman's "We Solve Murders" and really enjoyed it! I know his Thursday Murder Club series is well loved, but I was put off by the silly banter between the elderly people -- it felt overdone to me. Glad to have a chance to read something else by this author and am looking forward to the next in his new series :)

God of the Woods was my favorite book of 2024. James is also top of my list.
