How To Charge The Porsche Taycan: Deep Dive

In this video, we'll cover everything you need to know about charging the Porsche Taycan. It's a comprehensive review that also explains basic EV charging so even the novice can understand.

We realize we should have talked a little more about level 2 charging times.
Using the Mobile Charger or Mobile Charger Connect:
About 10 hours to fully charge the Taycan from zero with the 93.4 kWh battery
About 8.5 hours to fully charge the Taycan from zero with the 79.2 kWh battery
If you have a higher-powered (11 kW) Level 2 charger like the ChargePoint Home Flex and Enel-X Juicebox that we demonstrated in the video, your charging time should be roughly 1 hour less than if you used Porsche's Mobile Chargers.

We know not everyone needs to listen to some of the more elementary aspects of EV charging, so we're including the various timestamps below, so those that would prefer skipping some of the EV charging basics have that option.

There are a couple of corrections I need to point out. During the video, I say the Taycan is the only EV with two charge ports, and that's not correct, the Audi e-tron (also from VW Group) also has two charge ports - one on either side of the vehicle.

Additionally, I said there are no 400-v DC fast chargers in the US that can deliver more than 50 kW. The fact is there are a few of them - very few, and I maintain that the 150 kW 400v DC Fast charge option is still definitely not worth it. There are probably around 4, 000 DC fast chargers currently in the US, and likely less than 20 that are 400-Volt and can deliver more than 50 kW - and most of them can deliver 80 kW or 100 kW, not 150 kW.

Finally, I'm happy to report that you can get the Mobile Charger Connect with a longer 25' cable at no extra cost. I highly recommend you opt for the longer cable if you buy the Mobile Charger Connect.

You won’t find this comprehensive info on the Taycan charging anywhere else! FYI, the Audi e-tron has similar charging ports on both sides of car as well. Great video, Tom 👍

A thorough review of a topic that's more complicated than it should be, and closeups of a beautiful vehicle too! Thanks Tom!

Every Taycan owner should watch this video. They will learn more about charging their car from Tom than any dealer. Even as a Tesla owner, I learned several charging facts. High power EV source equipment must wait battery technology to catch up. Even if you charge at a Tesla V3-250 kw station, the batteries can only handle that power for about a minute. When they can handle that amount of power for 15 minutes without damaging the battery, we’ll get 250 mi of charging based on 1000 mph.

Very grateful for this comprehensive Taycan EV charging video, quite helpful even for me here in Japan, where things are a wee bit more confusing. CHAdeMo anyone?

Very informative video! I saw it was 45 min long and thought it was full of fluff, but you get straight to the point and go thru every detail I could imagine.
I get annoyed with 20 min videos on how to cook a 3 min egg haha!

Great video, thanks! The Tesla Destination chargers can be locked so they only work with a Tesla - please look for the sign next to the destination charger: red background = locked, white background = open to all vehicles. Around here, it will be open to all vehicles if Tesla provides the destination charger for free and the property owner pays for the install. If Tesla paid for everything (the install as well as providing the destination charger for free), they will have the red sign indicating Tesla vehicles only. For bigger installs, half of them typically are open to all vehicles.

Great video and thanks for providing all the valuable information and advice. I ordered the Taycan with the 150kw option that will apparently only provide valuable to Porsche's bottom line. Thanks for this advice though. Two other points, Porsche's Intelligent charger comes with a profile configuration that will only take your vehicle to an 80% charge. This is better for the battery if one is travelling short distances. To achieve 100% charge, you just turn the profile setting off. WIth the shortage of new vehicles, if you order a Taycan, one of the features is a charging cable that is 7.5 meters long. It is still a $0 cost option and allows full flexibility for charging multiple vehicles in one garage, either port.

Nice video. Requires the Kyle Out of Spec road trip style; arrive at 2% charge to 50% then move on to the next charger.

Tom, you rock this one, very informative! 👍..

Best charging 101 video yet.. happy you keep it to just the 3 plug types that truly matter .. soon will just be the 2 ..

BTW the eTron also have 2 charge ports .. identical setup as the Taycan ..

Great video. I am in the UK where I can connect the car directly into a Tesla wall charger or destination charger via the type 2 plug. Just fyi

Thank you for clarifying the 400v 50kw vs 150kw charger situation. I saw that option on the Porsche configurator, and was a bit confused about it.
