Are Chromebooks Worth It In 2022?

If you value portability, including incredible battery life, then a Chrome OS laptop may well be your best new purchase. These things are generally slim, light and can keep going all day on a single charge. Chromebooks can also be impressively flexible with their touchscreen design, especially if they fold into a tablet device like the Asus Flip CM3.

As with Windows laptops, you have a choice from super-affordable to premium machines. However, Chrome OS notebooks tend to be cheaper and simpler to use than regular laptops. On the flip side, Chromebooks often offer a limited selection of ports. Plus all of your work lives online in the cloud, and you can't enjoy as many services such as Steam (at least, not just yet).

They're great. For most people it's a great and cheaper alternative to buying a Windows laptop. If you're using it for standard word, excel, PowerPoint type programs and browsing and email etc it's super handy. Plus you don't need to worry about paying for software or security etc. cracking

as a secondary device I think they are exceptional option for most people. and can even be a primary device depending on your workload. the ability to make use of both web apps Android apps and some Linux applications makes a single device that is a very flexible and cost effective

I bought a chromebook as an additional laptop, and so far it has served me extremely well for meetings/presentations, exam preparation, content consumption, and light emulator gaming on the plane. While most complex tasks require looking for a few workarounds, like using google slides instead of powerpoint, and using chrome based web apps for most things, it isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, if you have an alternative windows/mac laptop or PC for times when a chromebook is inconvenient. Fantasitc value for money! Excellent battery life, a cheap investment, and generally great for carrying and usage on the go.

There's also the fact that they update in seconds and are pretty much immune from viruses

As I’ve always said: a Chromebook will do 98% of what 80% of people need to do on a computer. And let’s not forget - security, security, security! Nothing beats a Chromebook in that department.

Bought a 2nd hand lenovo chromebook tablet last year. It's the bomb for what I need and will be updated to 2026. Can install playstore apps and by enabling the Linux shell can install non play store apps too. Absolutely perfect for me. Came with removable keyboard and magnetic cover stand. Absolute bargain.

Chromebooks are kind of underrated as they are always bashed on by big tech channels and communities for some reason, when the reality is that a chromebook will do alot of what people need, for very reasonable prices, especially secondhand.

I used the same school issued chromebook all 4 years of high school, served me well and held on like a champ. Seriously, it became a point of pride for me that I had the same one since it meant I had taken good care of it. They're durable, portable, and exactly what I needed since I didnt really use it for anything other than typing notes. Looking to buy (a higher quality one) for college now.

my HP x360 12b has been nothing but amazing.

Till today. no lags, heating issues.
Gets all my student's work done ( Powerpoint, Word, Excel, pdf readers etc)
Browsing experience is beyond satisfactory.

The only tiny issue is the fact that I'm not techno-savvy enough to install Linux apps. But, playstore apps are more than enough.

I bought a Chromebook in late 2018. It was slow, only had an entry level HD screen, no front-facing camera and I thought to myself "Have I made a mistake?" Now, on my second Chromebook - a 2020 Lenovo Flex 5 - I can only wonder what to do with my old Windows Acer Laptop. I love ChromeOS and am never going back to Windows. Cheers everybody!

I moved to using a chromebook as my main business computer a few years ago. Basically because the mid range chromebook I have (acer spin 13 with i5 processor and 8gn ram) does everything I need working on the move. It has great battery life (all day work for me), is light and portable plus I already used workspace for work so great fit.

I think Chromebooks are great. I've had a couple of budget ones and ended up buying an Acer 713 for a little more speed and I couldn't be happier. I think when a lot of people assess what they actually use a laptop for, they will realise a Chromebook will serve all their needs.

It depends. If you just need something to type the occasional document on, browse social media, and watch a lot of youtube, a Chromebook is perfect. That's most people. If you need to specialize at all or like to do a lot of gaming, you might want to do some research. Personally, I'd never do anything but a Chromebook. They're cheap and super user-friendly. But my needs are fairly simple.

I started using pc's in the mid 80's with the first ones made, so I have a fair idea of their capabilities.
At work, you still got to have them mostly but, for home use, I haven't used a PC in at least 7 or 8 years.
And I'll never go back to pc's as long as I can get a chromebook.

I installed ChromeOS Flex on my old Acer Aspire V5-122p and now I use it more than I use my gaming laptop. This system is amazing: works on low end machines, it's easy to set up (just log in on your account), the battery life is amazing, everything works amazingly. For the average browsing and documentation is amazing. Great job done by Google, now every laptop can be a Chromebook!

The biggest thing i think you missed is they can run native Linux apps in a linux container, which will bring an humongous amount of open source software available from the Linux community and they also run Android apps which is also cool. So between chromeOS's own software, Linux & Android support these are really great little devices for 2022 and beyond. Yes they are not for everyone but if you take gaming and creativity aside the Chromebook is the ideal candidate for the average home user. :)

This is my perspective on this as who was in secondary school (high school) from 2013-2018 my age audience was the first to experience Chromebooks which introduced into my school in 2014. Having to used it in the original state it was great but webapps weren't able to make it a buyable option outside of school. But now with ChromeOS having android and more importantly Linux support does make it better for someone like me who studies IT however the issue is that many are too low in the specs but that is changing but potential buyers need to wait for the hardware to be on the level to utilise Linux better

Chromebooks have some big advantages if you can accomodate for the lack of local storage. Linux apps are what it makes them work for me!. Having access to something with a keyboard that manages ssh connection with a battery that last 18 hours is very handy for system administrators.

They are great when you are on the move and with the Linux capabilities you can even do real work using visual studio code. They make a great companion to your Android smartphone and pc. They make more sense than wasting money on an Apple laptop or the ridiculous iPad pro
