SOLVED: if you think it’s not working, it probably worked and you don’t know it. All the videos I found left out that you need to go to the “find my” app and hit the “+” button and read the AirTag on the phone. It should recognize the reset AirTag and trigger the “connect” prompt. It doesn’t do this on it’s own like when you first activated it

Very useful thanks. I had changed a flat battery and the Find My app said it was connected except then could not play a sound. Removed it from my items but could not reconnect will until found this trick of inserting battery 5 times. All good again.
