The Shelly Duvall thing is wrong. Kubrick 'torturing' her is an Urban Legend. And the record for most takes was the scene in the kitchen with Scatman and Danny Lloyd.

The baseball bat scene was about 100 takes...but done over three weeks. That's about 6 takes per day.

You see how enraged 'Jack' looks as he glares at Wendy holding that big erect 'bat'? It's almost envious. Jack is a limp 'jerk' from the start and you can sense a secret shame is haunting him. In fact, Jack is so limp that he can't even make the words 'come' anymore and it's plainly driving him 'nuts'. Doing the same self-indulgent thing over and over and over again can have that effect, ala 'jack torrents'. Jack longs for a big and manly 'axe' so he can really show the woman who's boss. All 'jerk' and no 'play' makes Jack a dull (impotent) and rageful boy.
How could anyone 'overlook' this? Like staring at too much porn, 'over look'.
C'mon, it's still Devil's night as I type...Hence, the 'frozen' image of a younger 'Jack' at the end. The eternal 'Playboy'.
