You have to nap the edge using a copper napper, tiny flakes, it will become way sharper than the metal blade, sharper than a medical tool. The funny thing is it will take you years to learn how to do it properly, highly recommend visiting a Indian Reservation.

Quick tip: use a wooden bat alongside your obsidian knife to defeat any geologist

obsidian isnt metal, it cant be sharpened through filing like most other knives, obsidian is volcanic glass and can be made to have sharp edges through fractures at the correct angles (its why all the pits in the knife are round, its the way that the material breaks naturally and you cant really do it any other way)

Obsidian is supposed to be the sharpest object on earth other than liquids like water

You have to pressure flake the edge, not grind it. It can be much sharper than steel when properly sharpened

Fun fact broken glass is the sharpest naturally occurring substance in nature

Tip: if used against archeologists, use the obsidian knife as a distraction so you can hit them with the baseball bat in your other hand.

As someone who wants to be a geologist, I am incredibly proud of all the people wise enough to bring baseball bats

Let's sharpen obsidian blade with regular sharpener.

<Blade proceeds to casually fuck up the sharpener>

Fun fact: the ancient Aztecs made swords out of obsidian that were so strong/sharp they could decapitate a horse

My grandpa was half Cherokee and he made arrowheads from obsidian. He put a bunch of them in frames and I have one of them on my wall, along with a very large one next to his memorial in my house. He was also an expert hunter and tracker, using both bow and rifle.

Many have mentioned that shards of obsidian are the sharpest objects to currently exist, but some haven't mentioned exactly how sharp. The sharpest point of an obsidian shard can be as fine as up to 30 angstroms, or 3x10^-7cm. That is sharp enough to cut a singular cell and is often used in situations where laser surgery is unavailable because it is just that sharp.

Obsidian can be way sharper than a chef’s knife, it’s very hard to get a uniform sharpness but those individual sharp areas are deadly

But that can never kill a geologist. They just gonna talk about the etymology of obisidian but they'll never see the baseball bat coming that was on my other hand.

Quick reminder: Since obsidian will fracture down to a single atom, it is claimed to have a cutting edge five hundred times sharper than the sharpest steel blade, and under a high magnification microscope an obsidian blade still appears smooth, whereas a steel blade has a saw like edge

Edit: Bro yall gotta stop fighting in the comments 💀

From what I read, the Mayans had a technique where they struck an obsidian crystal/rock, breaking it in such a way that one of pieces would have a very sharp edge, sharper than that knife.

When sharpened correctly, obsidian can be made into scalpels so sharp they don't leave a scar during surgery, it separates the membrane instead of cutting through it.

Isn't obsidian one of those things that can get *molecularly* sharp? I like how he immediately stopped when he realized he wrecked his prized possession.

Edit* changed from "atomically" sharp to "molecularly" sharp as I had heard that somewhere on YouTube before
