Looks more like proof of concept. I'm sure the apps will look a lot different when they are finish with the work. Some people in the forums have ridicule the Pop for the lack of proper designs, things like UI and colors. Not yet to my taste, but I'm glad they want to be more than rebranded Ubuntu with Pop OS.

Stay optimistic people, this is going to be really beneficial in the future!

Wow.... Very nice. Can't wait. The UI has a pleasing pop and fast interaction. Hopefully a beta version this coming release. Thanks for the insight.

The desktop widget is the same widget that's in GNOME Settings today. It's just a GTK3 widget compiled as a dynamic library. Running the project from its repository is just showing that widget in a GTK window, purely for testing.

The only thing that holds me back from switching to Pop os is because of it ships with gnome desktop. But maybe I’ll give it a second change when it’s rust desktop environment is released

Thanks for the early look! Just a question if you don't mind, what tool are you using for the annotations in the video?

After new Pop os is released will gnome exstensions stop be a thing? Will personalization be lesser important?

There is also one thing we need to think about. What Pop OS will be next to Gnome after a year? Gnome is mature, well polished and very mainstream, PopOS with Rust won't be out of the box. I think Gnome will still will be the better choice.

I would really like that the launcher searched files and folders automatically (without having to type 'find')

When this upgrade ships, will upgrading from one version to another be an option? Or will completely reinstalling be the better option?

They are doing wonderful work, but I hate the color theme, that is why I left them and went to Fedora silverblue. I used Pop OS for 2 years, but I could not theme it with blue accent

Which gui library are they using ? I'm not sure there's any mature GUI library in rust.

Can I use the launcher like a normal application? Im currently using xmonad because cosmic on gnome is laggggy and i couldnt get the launcher thats included by default running in any other wm, so i hope that i can use the rust one to do this.

Everything seems really ugly for now, hope it improves soon. If they go that route, I'll probably switch from Pop to a more stock GNOME distro, which is unfortunate

I like the effort, but the UI look and feel is a serious part of the Pop!_OS experience. If the Settings UI is a hint of things to come, that would be a sad move away from a great experience. I find it to be extremely ugly. Hopefully, it is just a proof of concept for now.

Rust won't make anything "magically" faster though, especially when you're comparing to C. Just saying.

Separating app and workspace was a huge mistake, like abandoning gnome search, the most powerful tool in gnome...

Alpha in summer 2023. Stable release in 2024 - maybe.
