As a retired diesel mechanic
( CAT, CASE, CUMMINGS, DETROIT, MACK ) I've Delvac and Rotella 15W40 since the mid 70s and never had a issue. Had a FE390 run 300, 000 miles and never opened it up! Briggs and Stratton 3.5 hp push lawnmower ran 24 years on that oil. PM / PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE is the clue to longevity!!!

I've found oil viscosity does make a difference. With 10w30 I had low oil pressure at idle and hot. 10w40 no issues. Older engines that are well broken in have larger clearances and can use thicker oil to fill the gaps.

30+ years as a professional HD diesel mechanic and I love 15w40 in older motors, gas or diesel, I use it in my Farmall 300. Next oil change cut that Fram filter open and inspect their construction and quality, you will find another brand soon afterwards. Safe travels sir!

Buckin’! Good ol’ co-op gold 15w40 goes in all my old trucks! Keeps those big V8’s running like a top! The heavier 15w40 gives a bit more cushion to dampen valve train clatter. Co-op gold DMO 15w40 #1 go to oil! 🙂

If you want to know about oil viscosity look up Bob is the oil guy. The first number is cold viscosity rating the second number is the actual weight of the oil at operating temp. Love your videos and my first comment.

I have used rotella T4 15- 40 diesel oil in my 89 1500 chevy 305 for years. Never had an issue

Good old truck that has served you well on this trip. You ask and Myrtle comes through

100% agree Billy! Been doing this for 30+ years! Lower weight oils are for gas mileage. I talked with a Mobil 1 engineer and this is what he told me.

Thanks for the info on oil and the old engines. It’s been cool to see how many miles Old Myrtle still has left in her.

Buckin, old engines need zinc in the oil to protect the camshaft. New oils don’t have it because zinc would kill catalytic convertors over time so the EPA in the US had the manufacturers remove it. If you want the engine to last, either you run an oil that has it (Rotella 15/40 does) or put a break in additive in your oil.

Hi Zinc Delisle oil 15w40 mineral oil. I always use military garde oils because they tend to be more heavy duty. I own a truck 60 thousand km was a bit noisy down the main road. I serviced it put my oil that I like in it and completely different engine quite smooth does make a difference. Keep up great work mate!

I used to pick up Baldwin filters from Union Tractor for my 1979 Ford E150 van and '98 Chev 1500. I more recently tend to use Wix.

I don’t disagree a bit except that one oil could work in anything. With temperatures varying from -60c to +45c in populated areas and huge variations in engine tolerances we need 3-4-5 varieties that work.

In my truck and tractor I run rotella t6 15w40 in the summer, Walmart 5w40 synthetic in the winter. We get down to the -20F in winter so the 5w synthetic makes a huge difference during cold starts. I do actually use 0w40 in the tractor in the winter as it keeps my driveway clear and also does lots of sitting.

I know you like conventional oil and there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s a little cheaper and the most important thing is changing your oil, the type is definitely secondary.

I’ll knock on wood and say I do spend more, and that’s never cost more then the oil change.

I also run oem filters, or rebadged wix. Most filters are fine, but a few brands are not as well built I just go with low cost with known good construction. Unfortunately. In the video I see one of the brands that will make crap filters, but that model may not be poor. The difference is is on crap ones the filter material is held in place by carboard that can’t hold up to infinity. A good filter uses metal to hold the media. It doesn’t break down and add particles to the oil and also allow unfiltered oil through it. Again I don’t know their good models vs bad ones but you’ll never see Fram on my engines I don’t want to dissect them to find good vs bad. Wix rebranded is better and usually cheaper. I got a free fram with my last oil purchase, I refused it and asked for an $8 car quest (wix) which they just gave me as it was $3 less then the free fram.

Morgan’s description is correct. The first number is at 0c, the second number is at 100c temperature. The thing about synthetics is they hold their performance better outside those tested temperatures.

Please note I try to give multiple alternatives of good when discussing oil and filters. I’m not a brand snob in general, but there is some definitely inferior options and I will name them and avoid them. The list of good products is much much longer then the garbage list.

Now that some of my vehicles are getting older, I also add a shot of Lucas oil treatment when I change the oil. Other than 2 stroke, I add Lucas to pretty much everything even my lawn mower. For my 2 strokes I use Lucas 2 stroke oil. About 25% Lucas to total crankcase volume seems to do the trick. 15W40 is typically used in diesel engines. I tried 15W40 in my pickup and it resulted in crankshaft rattling on cold start. I live in a hot/cold climate though. In cold climate I recommend a synthetic or synthetic blend oil in very cold temps below 0 F.
