Nordic Rituals For New Year & Winter // Winter in the Nordic countries might seem harsh and freezing, but it’s also full of beauty and unique traditions that make it really special. In this video, I’m sharing how we handle the cold, dark months from appreciating the stillness of snow-covered landscapes to finding ways to actually enjoy the season ❄️

What I love about Nordic winters is how they slow everything down. It’s all about cozy evenings, fun outdoor activities like skating or skiing, and even reflecting on the year while sipping something warm. Winter here isn’t just about getting through it’s about embracing it and making it your own.

If you’re curious about Nordic traditions or just looking for ways to enjoy winter a little more, this video is for you. Hope you enjoy it! 😊

I am thrilled to have found this channel and have named my year after it. “Year of accepting who I am.”
I crave silence and live in a very quiet community on Vancouver Island. My little house faces a channel of water and is completely silent. I dislike noise, which includes most music. Christmas “muzak” in the stores gets me out as soon as possible. I do, however, love listening to the eagles, seals, and occasional loon, just outside my window. I love my walks in Nature and am blessed to have it all around me. I don’t have many friends as most of my neighbours are senior couples and single women don’t seem to be welcome at dinners. Until listening to this video, I thought I must be weird. Now I am convinced I am Finnish 😊

My grandmother was born in 1913 and lived into her 90s. She practiced most of these things and lived a simple life. She had a room where she would knit, sew, and watch the birds at the bird feeder. There was an encyclopedia set and books, a TV with an antenna and dial that only got about 3 channels. No computer or cell phone. She refused to own a microwave and had a rotary phone. When I was a child it all seemed pretty boring, Now that I'm 40 I completely understand!

Getting outside is something I often overlook, but it's so important. Dressed appropriately, walking or hiking outside in winter, especially if you're in nature (a park works) feeds the soul somehow. If it's a day where there's no wind and it's softly snowing, it's pure magic.

I found your channel during a dark phase of my life and it not only cheered me up, but it woke me up as well. Life is precious. And we are here to embrace and enjoy it, not to simply exist in it. Thank you again! Ciao!

Yes I too love the sound of snow crunching under my steps. I witnessed something special in the light snow we had the other morning. The snow flakes fell on my dogs black fur. They did not melt right away, so I was able to see each flake in detail with the black fur back ground. It was amazing.

About five years ago, I started hand-painting plywood cut-outs of angels, stars, and animals to decorate the Christmas tree with. I now have two gift bags of them, and no intention to stop😅

Where I live, winter time is also theater time. Concert time. You go see a good play with your partner. Friends invite friends to their dance club performances. People go see their children sing or play musical instruments. I think this, too, is more about connection and community, than entertainment.

I needed this reminder to embrace a slower pace. It’s been dark and raining for like two months where I live. Thank you for this reminder to let go of the constant need to be productive.

Winter saved my life. I recall being seriously depressed one time but somehow I forced myself to bundle up and walk outside in a snowstorm, the kind of storm where you have to squint to see what is in front of you. It was magical and lifesaving for me.

One of the best things about being outside in the winter is no bugs! 🩷

This brought back so many wonderful memories of our five years in the north of Canada, not quite inside the Arctic Circle. It was a small community and we did so many things together with other families. I loved getting outside in the crunchy, squeaky snow, pulling a toboggan with the newest baby in it's cozy blanket nest. Northern lights, family evenings reading books or playing board games...all those great things to do when it's cold and snowy outside.

As a Canadian I can relate to your love of snow the crunchy walking sound, the stillness in the woods and the beautiful winter light with all that whiteness around. Now I want a home sauna!! I love your videos! Thanks.

I just love your videos and getting an inside glimpse of your beautiful region of the world. I am also deeply drawn to the intentional choices made toward a more simple and peaceful lifestyle that you describe. Living in America my entire life, this is a lifestyle I have craved for many year but find very difficult to create here. Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos and sharing this lifestyle with others, it is greatly appreciated.

My gosh my blood pressure dropped just listening to this video and watching the gorgeous winter scenes! I have always loved winter and snow...even have a snowflake tattooed on my shoulder. Plan to visit Scandinavia soon and retrace a trip from my youth when I fell in love with all things Nordic. Funny that at the time I did not know my ancestry is Danish and Norwegian but it makes sense. I never felt more at home than I did there

Unlike most others I know, I love winter! I live in Detroit, Michigan, USA, our winters are quite cold, however, we no longer receive much snow… But I enjoy the quiet, the solitude, and the introspection that cold weather can bring. Many thanks for your videos and much food for thought!☺️ Happy New Year!🎉🎈🎉 Linda

I live in the Upper Midwest, Wisconsin. I meet other retirees at the Dog Park to walk my first mile in the AM. It is often snowy and icy.We all have "Ice Bugs" a boot with spikes on the bottom. Can order them at Amazon for men and women . I couldnt do it without them.

This is very good advice. I look forward to Winter because it is a time to relax and embrace these quiet days.
