Completely agree with everyone's suggestion of Boys II Men - It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday.
I would also suggest Huey Lewis and the News - It's Alright or their song Naturally. Also fantastic acapella pieces.

We told ya! Glad you got to it, 'cause DAMN. Oh, and the a capella version IS technically the original - it came out as a single before the version with instruments did. As for why they decided to do it? Well, a lot of R&B groups in the early 90s wanted to make sure that we KNEW they could sing - En Vogue started it, then Boyz II Men came through, and then it snowballed. (There was also a big backlash against those that would lip sync in their performances which also spurred on the pure singers.)
